You seem to not be getting the point. "You'll realize as time goes on" sounds a LOT like you'll telling me like I'll understand something too complex for my wee little brain when I'm older and wiser (like you, I assume the implication is), when I very much do understand right now and have before you...

I specifically pointed out the wording I found to be condescending - the "you'll understand as time goes on" language, which is very patronizing. I would have still disagreed with your point if you had left that out, but I could at least have dealt with it purely on the merits of your statement rath...

I think damage is done to those of certain views for seeking attention certain ways. You will realize as time goes on how different people with autism are from one another based on type groups. The autism way of thinking for instances more often then not not exactly true but rather assumption. No o...

If the mainstream dialogue about cure was about treatment - speech therapy, social skills classes, motor skills training and all that - I think that most people in both the current "anti-cure" and "pro-cure" factions would be in agreement that this is a good thing. Very few people would be anti-cure...

It seems a lot - not nearly all, but a good number - of people on the spectrum's problems stem from public ignorance and stigma. We learn to value ourselves less, to lower our expectations, to question or even abandon thinking that we are inherently worth as much as non-autistic people. THIS is exac...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "The woman's place is in the home", nor do I have any problem with having a boss who's female. The point is she would've known it would make me undesirable to other women; that's what made it so utterly heinous. Jeez, and god forbid your boss, who has at least som...

About the electric shock level - the JRC has revised its GED three times (they are now on GED-IV) to make it more painful. Just to be clear, this means that they have shocked people who are sent there so much that they have had to make three subsequent versions of the machine to make sure that they'...

Please go read about the use of aversives like electric skin shock on autistic people at the Judge Rotenberg Center. Read about the use of restraint and seclusion, which often leads to serious injury, psychological trauma and even death, on autistic people for the most minor of annoying behaviors in...

Jeez, this is awful. :\ I really hope that he and his family can find an excellent legal team to get him off the hook, and then sue the pants off the police department and/or the city (to say nothing of the person who reported him for being "suspicious" for sitting outside a library) for how they've...

I second Discworld and Temeraire. I'd also recommend A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, if you're into big medieval (low) fantasy epics with lots of characters.

I can say from experience that life can be worth living as a woman that the mainstream culture would consider "ugly." I've got a couple facial deformities and, depending on how you count it, 7 or 8 scars. Yeah, it's sucked sometimes, but I still like being me as I am more than I want to be anybody o...

Hmm. I answered "yes" to a lot of the questions about feeling bad about people who are suffering, but I had a hard time with the questions asking about whether I can see other people's point of view when I disagree with them. It almost seems like the test was confusing sympathy with empathy. I can f...

Everyone has a right to their opinion, but that does not preclude other people from questioning their opinion, and hopefully helping them to refine it if it is based on inaccuracies or biases. I am also uncomfortable with the language of "illness" with regards to spectrum conditions. Even if it does...

Okay, I've been reading about two of these cases today, and in both cases people are saying that the parents of the kids are to blame for these sorts of incidents for even trying to mainstream their kids. I'm not saying that I know for a fact that the parents are faultless - for all I know, they cou...

As if the incident weren't disgusting enough, the comments on the article were absolutely sickening. No wonder more regular human rights abuses against the disabled like those that occur at the JRC or some mental institutions get overlooked, if this is how most people read the situation. :( I can't ...

Amnesty International needs to know about this. I think the Human Rights Campaign as well. I think this outrages me more than Wal-Mart, BP, the GOP, Enron, AIG, and MTV combined. Unfortunately, a bunch of the human rights organizations have been contacted about this, but few have shown interest. Al...
