I've heard of chaps desperately trying to do that kind of an "if you don't fall in love with me I'm going to make your life very unpleasant" thing, but I've not seen anything quite that extreme.

That's certainly one definition, and I guess it's as valid as any of them. But whatever the perfect gentleman turns out to mean, what I mean is the genuine, honest chap, as opposed to the cheat. I should just have said that in the first place, but as usual I was in a hurry. Sorry for the confusion. ...

Well, I was using the term loosely, which is probably the only way it can be used. I mean the kind of chap who out of principle would be loathe to nobble the competition, seek undeserved brownie points by hiding his shortcomings and exaggerating his strengths, or use other dirty tricks to improve hi...

I kind of liked Tandy but I agree about the quality problem - the hi-fi items always seemed to have one thing in the spec that wasn't up to scratch, and a lot of their stuff seemed overpriced. And the marketing was a bit over the top. But it was the first place I knew of where you could get a "...

What I don't understand is why the perfect gentlemen didn't go extinct a long time ago. Is there something else going on to balance it out, or are the perfect gentlemen all faking it?

Well I suppose the gods are more dominant than humans, though nobody's ever managed to catch one in a box, so they're a bit like Bigfoot.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx24lxl85wyo The problem seems to be that whether you call it explaining, excusing, or blaming his behaviour on autism, he does seem to have linked it with autism, and he does seem to be trying to use his autism as a defence against accusations of sexual harassmen...

He used to do when I was force-fed him at school. I was about 14 or 15 years old and the language made no sense to me at all, and I was struggling to follow the plots of almost anything that had more than 2 or 3 characters. I felt quite relieved when the English teacher happened to say that the scen...

I wonder what the first person ever to hear a fart thought Here are my speculations on that awesome question: Animals don't find farting at all funny or offensive as far as I know, and I'm pretty sure it's a fairly modern thing to react to it - some uptight people decided it was rude so that made i...

The toilet's still free. And most of the gas stations used to have free hot water so you could have a free pee and a free tea on your travels as long as you remembered to take a tea bag and some milk, but those hot water spouts aren't as common as they used to be. I suppose it's all done in the hope...

Oh I thought you meant physically dry, like low humidity and not much rain. I don't think I can change my vote now :-( I don't think Arkansas is "dry," but I've heard of such things nearby. Doesn't bother me because I don't drink much alcohol. I think it's nice in a way because according t...

I think it means that when it comes to war and the mating game, people tend to play dirty tricks, probably because it's usually so important to win. It's pretty obvious that war is going to be a dirty game because it involves mass murder and blasting people's stuff to smithereens. I think they just ...

I think I'd like to try being a Gaul in that place Asterix used to live in. It was great - a tiny place in France holding out very successfully against the Romans by being stronger and way smarter than they were.
