Forum: Parents' Discussion   Topic: Is a diagnosis important?

What was the psychiatrist's reasoning for dismissing Aspergers? I believe a diagnosis is important for the same reason a diagnosis is important in any other medical situation. Autism is a neurological difference, and it's helpful to a person to know why he or she isn't understanding things in the sa...

Thorny_Rose there are many similarities I read in your post about our children that seem to fit in with the risk/benefit analysis. Any indicator that would warrant such a powerful drug is not there in this case, as it seems to not be there in your daughter's case either. You have completely distract...

Thorny_Rose thank you for sharing that information. That post just shored up the ever increasing belief I have that Risperdal would not be right for my boy.

Do you find that Vyvanse less affects her personality? Have the Risperdal side effects fully abated?

I'm in the same situation. I think I am going to go to Costco and get a bag of individually wrapped treats of some sort and attach them to a card. Hopefully others will post some good ideas because I am broke and can't afford to buy gifts for everyone. There are so many people to buy for... Irishwhi...

He has AS with sensory integration dysfunction. He doesn't explode anymore; rather, he does have tantrums and fidgets like mad. He stims a lot too. In fact, his stimming changes according to his environment - he hand flaps mostly in the car for instance. I have absolutely no idea why. He says his ha...

The more I look at this, the more I realize that the meds are probably not the answer. He has another appointment today and I am going to tell them that we are going to keep on with the behavioral modification. It is slow, but steady, and it does work. I just have to make sure he gets the ideal situ...

You know I never thought of it that way - he's taking on the role of a cat and that has to be far more easy than trying to deal with all of the rules of the world. Often when he gets frustrated he yells how much he hates "society's rules" and how they make no sense. That has to be hard for him to wa...

I am in such appreciation for your responses. These were exactly the kinds of replies I was hoping to get. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts on this since I can only get so much from research and studies. Hearing about people's reactions to different treatments helps to get an idea...

ravenclawgurl, what B vitamins do you take - is it labeled as a B-Complex or do you take specific ones? What doses do you take?

Thank you for your replies. I guess for the time being, I will let him continue to do it while we are home, but remind him when we are in public that he should be his human self. I will concentrate on the things that are more annoying and disruptive to me and those around him.

My son has become obsessed with cats and acts like a cat quite often. He pretends to be a cat in public and with other kids around. He makes purring and meowing sounds and although I think it's cute, he's way too old (10) to be pretending to be a cat and it certainly draws attention in the supermark...

Does anyone have any experience with Risperdal for their child? The psychiatrist is suggesting this for my son (10 yo, Aspergers Syndrome) but I have serious reservations due to the side effect of male breast enlargement and the lack of testing in children. I have been getting "medicate him" from sc...

The disorganization issue could be problematic I would think, and honestly from what you describe, in my experience, these sound like spectrum related issues. This is by no means a definitive answer for you, but I think that what I am trying to say is that it is OK to have him seen elsewhere and get...

My mother does this all the time. I think it is so not helpful and annoying because it feels like she's burying her head in the sand and that doesn't help him at all. I have resolved to do what is necessary to help him and understand that it's her way of trying to "help" him too. I am not sure if sh...

My son's WISC-IV processing speed is extremely low, but his verbal comprehension is very high - a 53 point difference! He has AS. Apparently this is a common finding in people with AS. Hans Asperger noted this originally in his findings on AS. Not all of his patients but 48% of them. There are many ...
