I am very sensitive to noise in general. Not sudden loud bangs, but just the constant rumble and hum always present in any normal sized city wears on my nerves. I'm aware of it even at night when supposedly all is quiet. My solution is to live alone in isolation in the woods and hills away from the ...

I am thus more interested in unifying principles, thoughts, ideas and actions. In other words I have a have a natural dialectical 'whole picture' approach in seeing the world, as opposed to seeing the world through analytical eyes which would be more detail orientated, compartmentalized, and not so...

I've heard about our amygdalas being bigger. I dunno much about the amygdala, but apparently people with smaller or damaged ones have less fear. Since we're known to be anxious, fearful, and sensitive I was wondering if there was any connection between that and our bigger amygdalas. On a side note,...

I guess I was being confusing. I wasn't asking you to justify it. I was just saying that it's unmeasurable, which is why I am going by the more well-defined presence/absence of "developmental delay". OK, but the post that you defended came very close to equating severe autism with mental retardatio...

Well, how are you going to measure "severity", anyway? There are dozens of ways to do it, and they all come up with different answers. "Severity" was first raised not by me, but rather in the post you supported. Since I was the one who expressed concerns about that post, it is incomprehensible to m...

Hey, "direct link" refers to a correlation--it doesn't say anything about which causes which. Daniel's right; there's a link. Which way the link goes, no one knows. For that matter, why does it have to go either way? It could just be that both things are caused by whatever genetic factors create th...

There's a direct link between the severity of autistic symptoms and IQ level; they've known this for a long time, and it hasn't changed either. Assertions of this nature run the risk of misinterpretation, and can be highly prejudicial. It stands to reason that autists with low IQ would generally ex...

The DSM is published by the American organization, but the membership of the committee responsible for updating it comes from countries around the globe. At one time I checked this and found on the DSM website the number of representatives from each country. I am sure the info is still there if you ...

If you look under the severity tab on the AMA website you will see that the severity criteria have yet to be proposed. In any case, I can't imagine the DSM forbidding changes in severity status when warranted.

My ability to interact socially has improved continually, albeit slowly, over many years since I was a teen. Perhaps I am just a slow learner. As an example, I have a compulsion to correct mistakes made by others in conversation. In my teens I would just immediately blurt out the correction in the b...

The AMA has released a draft of proposed changes to DSM-5. As expected, autism spectrum disorders have been folded into a single category. http://www.dsm5.org/ProposedRevisions/Pages/proposedrevision.aspx?rid=94 Below is a link to the DSM-5 Development home page. It seems that comments are accepted ...

The cognitive extremes and variation of AS/ASD are frequently discussed here, but I suspect we have emotional response imbalances as well. Some AS will have enhanced anger reactions, and others very muted. I have very muted anger and fear responses, and have never been in a physical altercation in m...

Chris, Sorry for the misinterpretation. Diane Williams seems to be merely putting the idea out for debate as well. Williams' observation that most people have a balance of left/right abilities seems accurate to me, and most of those with a dominant side have only a slight dominance. Perhaps those wh...

I find It really interestin though, that as Donna Williams pointed out, it is most common that Autie are more right brained dom, whilst mostAspies are left brained dom. I am skeptical as to the accuracy of your conclusion. Donna Williams provides no evidence to back up her very tentative suggestion...

Hey! I just took the test and scored 100%. 18 to zip in favor of the left side. Guess my brain is rather lop-sided. And yes, I am INTJ. And no, I have no artistic, creative, acting, or musical talent WHATSOEVER. As a child, I presented more like classic autism, and was anything but a typical aspie p...
