What stresses me out most is not being able to sort out the jumble of stuff going round my mind, and communicate it with other people in a meaningful way. This for me is such a fundamental limitation in how I can interact and socialise with people, it constantly makes me feel helpless, inadequate, e...

Sounds like you may need to give your GP a push - or to get somebody to go with you to help you do that. He shouldn't have let the interview end without giving you a clear indication of what he was going to do for you. It might be quicker to ask NHS Direct whether or not there's a NHS specialist in...

Well, I had the full diagnosis appointment today, and it's positive. Looks like a fairly clear-cut case. Don't know whether to laugh or cry. Good to hear you've been through the process and hope having the result proves a useful and beneficial tool for you. Thanks so much for sharing the process wi...

Thanks for this fascinating thread - really enjoying reading through all the points and responses. 13-ANXIETY Definitely, this is a big one for me. I've got socially anxious all my life - in fact before reading about AS, I spent several years just thinking I was socially anxious, though realised tha...

I love films and usually have greater concentration and attention span for them than reading books. On the whole I can usually get the gist of the plot pretty well, though often miss some of the more subtle aspects of some films. What I do find really difficult though is describing or summarising a ...

Definitely exercise helps me significantly, especially a burst of intense cardiovascular exercise. Though the effect can be quite subtle, I think as well as the immediate endorphin boost, if exercising regularly you gain a better, more grounded sense of yourself, and I feel more healthy and confiden...

Got 12 out of 20 in the BBC test. I'm surprised I got as many as I did considering how difficult it was! To be honest, I've always thought in day-to-day life I've been quite good at spotting facial expressions an emotions. Though I was left thinking after this test that the difficulty here was lack ...

I think when I was younger I felt this more. A few years ago I think the feelings of isolation would win, and I would happily be on my own and play on the computer or watch TV without feeling overtly lonely. Now it's almost the other way around - if I spend any considerable amount of time on my own ...

The problem with that is the fact that i find it extremely hard to talk about things that aren't relevant to that moment, i just don't think about it, i don't know if this is common in people with ASDs though? I don't know if it's common, but it's certainly the case for me. The context for a conver...

It's such a pain in school, especially - lessons are often just wastes of time, because I work so much better at my own speed. Lack of empathy very much compounds this. It takes so much concentration to understand what's being said - I really try to analyse all of it, which is exhausting. I find it...

Yes, this happens to me at lot. Maybe the context thing is why small-talk is so difficult? Because small-talk is often about seemingly random, or at least out of context subjects? I seem to have particular problems processing information from people who talk very fast, or talk in a verbose manner. I...

You have my utmost sympathy over your plight, as it's clearly very closely related to what I'm going through, wondering about how to get a fair diagnosis. I guess a key question for you is, how urgent is the DX? In my case, my employers are about to increase their expectations of me in a very Aspie...

I pace when I'm thinking and excited. I've always found walking good for thinking. Pacing drove my parent mad when I was a child - I remember then always commenting on it - I didn't find it odd, or even realise I was doing it, so I think I just ignored them! |

You're right, it is all exhausting and I know trying to be normal rather than myself is counter-productive. I often wonder if I really know what is is like to be myself, having spent my life trying to be someone else. Trying to communicate who I am and how I feel seems too much for me. I can sometim...

I've not gone to a GP yet, regarding aspergers or anything else, because of the worry that they'll see me as a hypochondriac. This is, of course, frustrating.. I felt exactly the same way. I did go and talk to my GP about aspergers just last week and I didn't think he saw me as a hypochondriac. Whi...
