Hi bobreed, This is the sort of thing that varies from person to person but I'll share my experiences and observations about stimming in case it helps. I would often get compulsions to stim as a kid and if you had asked me why I wouldn't have been able to answer either, even now it's not really easy...

I live on Long Island but did go to a support group once that was facilitated by Lynda Geller, a psychologist who practices in Manhattan, she founded this organization http://spectrumservicesnyc.com/aboutus.html. I've never been to a therapy session with her but she seemed good from the group.

Sometimes when I read this forum there are interesting topics and interesting posters, but sometimes I get annoyed of autistic people on this forum with prejudices. i believe that the majority of people on wrong planet do not have autism. i think that very many people are attracted to their idea ab...

I think you handled it appropriately. If they hug you again I'd just give them a quick pat on the back and send them on their way. Some degree of physical contact and affection is acceptable in schools, though I know it really depends on the setting (I've never been to a parochial school so I don't ...

Wow, Sandy. Let's see... Can anybody here say "hype"? This storm was completely underwhelming. Power outages and, if you live within like 5 miles of the ocean, flooding. Yeeeeah...I'm not gonna say this was any worse than your average thunderstorm. Except maybe for the flooding, which affected the ...

My understanding was that skin picking perceived imperfections is more on the OCD spectrum than a stim. Personally I've never picked at anything I perceived to be an imperfection and I've been a skin picker as long as I can remember; I just love the sensation of picking.

Callista, after reading your initial post I had assumed you had been in an ABA classroom yourself. Receiving a star chart does not count as ABA; by that logic then just about every kid in the education system has had ABA. Those were some pretty strong accusations to make about ABA without having exp...

Callista most behaviorists don't think that way, actually most ABA classrooms are highly individualized to suit the needs as well as interests of the students and ask student's opinions frequently, they certainly don't treat them like blank, thoughtless boxes. Whenever possible, teachers involve the...

If the OP's friend wants to help autistic kids, then I recommend going into education to develop materials and techniques to teach autistic kids in ways that work for them based on how their brains work. A good ABA program does that. That's why it's used for kids with autism (though many of princip...

Callista, modern ABA programs are nothing like you describe. Or at least good ones aren't; I have seen behaviorist approaches poorly implemented so I'm sure there are still places out there run that poorly still exist, but I'll say again, whether or not ABA is appropriately implemented is dependent ...

I'm just curious as to what you consider humanistic therapies? Something like floor time? The thing about floor time (aside from the fact that there's very little to no research to support it) is that it's only effective for a certain portion of people in the autism population, it may help children ...

I've never received ABA therapy myself but I'm studying ABA and I love it. I can understand why ABA has a bad reputation, actually when I first observed an ABA classroom I was very disappointed in what I saw but after studying it more thoroughly and having more observations in different settings I c...

I've gone to a few concerts and they can be fun. If you like the music and if the audience isn't too drunk/rowdy it should be okay. The first concert I went to was a symphonic metal concert. The guy I was with wanted to stay in the mosh pit, just walking through the mosh pit pre-concert stressed me ...

Aspergers in adult women, even in girls, can be really difficult to recognize and there are a lot of professionals out there who don't know what to look for. I was once told by a psych at my university that I had anxiety and depression and not AS, but neither of those disorders covered the broad ran...

I am disappointed that the NC is ending, but honestly I haven't really been into his reviews the past few months, I do think it's better to end with dignity than to let the show drag on. I do hope he comes back on occasion, since there are movies I would really like to see him review. Milo and Otis ...

I enjoyed the film, but don't think it lived up to its potential. It could have been better if it didn't have the O'hare subplot and instead focused on the Onceler's transformation into a greedy villain. I mean the majority of the book was pretty much focused on the Onceler destroying the forest, th...
