I have cut my own hair for around five years. Yes, it is a mess at first but it can be learned fairly quickly. The most important thing is to go slow at first and really focus on what effect what you are about to do is going to produce. Multiple mirrors are also a must.

I get unwanted attention from females every once in a while but never from anyone I would be interested in.
