I don't think there is any way to know for sure how it will go. It depends on what is available for her at school and how they handle her, and how she'll take it. If you're having a hard time paying for evaluation sending her to school could help get some of those questions answered. If she is disru...

I do very well on an atypical antipsychotic (Geodon). I'm a danger to myself and my parents because of my melt downs when I'm not on it. Sure, I'd rather not be on it, but we we lowered the dose by 20% very recently, I started having more melt downs and couldn't handle frustration as well and was t...

Your question is too general to answer well, but I'll try to say something helpful. I'm not completely NT myself. I have ADHD. In some ways I can speak as an NT but in some ways I can't. Not all NTs do well in terms of social skills. Many NTs are more introverted and don't care to develop relationsh...

It sounds like there are a lot more options for you than there are where I live. Many children with high functioning autism don't need a full time aid, or even speech therapy. My youngest son got speech therapy but hasn't had any other special services. His diagnosis is unclear and he may or may not...

I didn't know they'd make the tics worse, but that makes sense. My eldest is bi-polar and the ADHD meds make that worse so he can't take them anymore. Before that developed they were very helpful for him. I've known a few kids who were put on one med by their ped who prescribed whatever the most rec...

I'm also baffled by the "belonging to a group" thing. For me closeness is something that can only come about through one-on-one interaction. ... Nobody dares make themselves vulnerable. I can't relate to groups where the sole purpose seems to be to joke and entertain each other. How is it possible ...

My little guy's is one that seems like he outgrew it, but I'm not making any claims whatsoever. He wasn't forced into it and there is nothing repressed about him, which isn't to say that couldn't be the case for some other kids. He didn't speak until five or so and wasn't consistantly understandable...

Azurecrayon,

I'm very amused that you mention the Zombie Survival Guide. I can see my husbands copy of it on his night stand, which I gave him for some occasion before we were married.

I think many if not most NTs are quite willing to explain if the questions are posed politely. I think it's great that you started a thread to ask these kinds of questions and have every right to ask. 1. Why do you not have special interests? I do have special interests, I just don't monologue about...

They might have just been watching him because he's a cute kid, and they didn't mean to stare. People watching is a fairly popular thing to do, but usually it's done discreetly.

I think having the diagnosis will help a lot. I was in the same position when my eldest was younger. We homeschooled at that time and people didn't know if his differences were because of parenting or something else. He's been in public school for several years now (I now have to work) and still has...

It sounds like your on the right track and won't just come away with a diagnosis but with a good idea of your child's strengths as well as any deficits. The psychologist who tested my kids had teachers fill out forms and it was really interesting to see the differences in their scores compared to mi...

Did you only try the one med? It sounds like you didn't really get a chance. My children have all taken ADHD meds, and so do I. My eldest had to try at least five things before we found one that worked OK without causing problems. Middle son had nearly miraculous results with the first thing he trie...

I think you handled the situation perfectly and don't understand what the fuss is about. The child asked you to do it and you only sprayed a little in a very safe spot. It's not toxic and doesn't stain. I believe that all play at a public playground should be acceptable by local standards so all chi...

Avoiding the issue can make it seem like something to be ashamed of. I'd explain it to him right away. My eldest was diagnosed at about that age, 8/9. He knew why he was being tested and was a big part of the whole process. Middle son was diagnosed at 11 but if we'd known earlier we wouldn't have wa...
