How can the quest for money be a universal human when for most of human evolutionary history store-able wealth did not exist? Because humanity has embraced something called Consumerism as an overwhelmingly dominant ideology. From the time a child is born it is taught at the conscious and subconscio...

Steven Harper, in Ottawa must be just a chortling as this Rob Ford fiasco plays out.
All the attention across Canada is on Ford, and no one is paying the least bit of attention to the omnibus bill he's slipping through, also taking the heat a bit off his buddies Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin.

The skills he has taught you, assuming they're good skills as you say are very helpful for you to fit into society, when you need to. But there is a cost to using those skills, you have to live as though you're someone other than who you are, and this creates cognitive dissonance... That is you are ...

I tend to agree with the article, at least at first thought.... Many of us though, myself definitely, learn to block the empathy that is too strong for us to process, so that we can cope. We are separated into groups here by those who block and those who don't. Interesting timing for this post too, ...

Verdandi, by your condemnation of "differently abled" vs "disabled" you are saying that everyone is disabled. No one is as strong as the strongest person, thus everyone else is disabled. No one is as smart as the smartest person, thus everyone else (including the strongest person aforementioned, unl...

More importantly Autism is not a disease, those around us don't become autistic by association. Our being disabled does not suddenly cause society to become sick and die. We are not rotten potatoes that will turn everyone black and covered in flies! Society will continue to function normally regard...

if one group reproduces more successfully given sufficient generations, the group(s) that don't will be eliminated through attrition. "It may be that ... smaller, weaker, slower ... do so as well" This is only true in the short run. What you're saying here is populist pseudoscience. Try reading som...

Just some comments i'll quickly respond to... "We're better than nature" oh wait BETTER not just better. We are nature, actually not even that, we're only a part of nature. Yet we're better than it? Is this because your god said so? Whatever. I'm not offering a "justification" i'm saying what is. Th...

Here's an article about such misunderstandings: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=darwin-misunderstood Unfortunately, that is what happened, and it led to two myths about evolution that persist today: that there is a prescient directionality to evolution and that survival depends ent...

The views expressed in the following do not necessarily reflect those of the poster, and are only a representation of the reality of nature. Inefficiency is the quickest way to extinction. In a world and universe where the only law is "Survival of the fittest" any individual or group which does not ...

So I guess how this ties back to the OP is that I do feel like how *I've* detached myself from emotions was a practised, conscious thing. But, as I started with, I don't think that this is the same thing as feeling like you're an observer to yourself. Furthermore, I also don't feel that I can easil...

I have felt like an observer in my own life for as long as I can remember. The worst part for me is that my family and friends sometimes sense this emotional distance, and are hurt by it. I seem to have the emotions needed for survival, such as fear, but not the emotions needed for social connectio...

May I suggest a reading. Charles Darwin: On the Origin of Species Once you read this, and understand what it is saying, you will realize that a group which gives equality to it's weakest members is destined to fail, and replaced by a stronger group that ignores and subjugates it's weakest members. N...

Ugh. I just made a big mistake. I hate hate hate myself. I've never drunk regularly before, and only very sparingly, and I've never abused drugs, except when I overdosed in a suicide attempt, but now I'm wondering if I should buy a whole bunch of alcohol and keep smashing myself. Bah! Alcohol won't...
