"mom, what's a little f*&^%er"? and this isn't sex ed :/ No, it's not, that's why I wrote about how sex ed is introduced on the playground - by the time they actually teach it, it's all about innuendo and giggling and insults. I was introduced to sex ed in a girls bathroom in the 6th grade - by...

ahh, Logitech, my heart hurts for you and I know you mean well. BUT I'm in the United States (you are not since you had a headmaster) - it's late, I'm tired and I could find the links to the research, but I don't want to do that now. Our country is rated like 12th or 14th in the world for education ...

Home school for someone with As is not a very good thing in my opinion you might end up making " The Child socially isolated " you need people around you to learn human stuff by taking it away they end up having to learn later in life which can be even more of a strain on them making them house bou...

The monkey dance while presenting the colors is just not cool. Later, during free time, it's okay, but there are times when it's just not right. I'm sorry about the bullying by other Scouts - we've seen it happen here too, but DH is Den Leader and we're working closely with the Boy Scouts in the Tro...

Yes, we pulled DS out of fourth grade and have been homeschooling him for about a year now. Downside: no class parties  On the subject of friends - a lot of the boys that my DS considered friends weren't really nice to him. He would do a lot of parallel play and not really notice that the othe...

"most parents"???????? I haven't replied until now because I don't quite know how to take that. Maybe I'm not in the "most" category but I've worked very hard to completely change my parenting so I can help my child. As parents we all do our best and we base that on what we learned from our parents....

I haven't gone to that website, but I nearly choked on my morning coffee when I read the name of the site - I get Katiesmom's humor. Around here we see all these bumper stickers about how my kid made the honor roll. Through Scouts, we know people that "complain" about their kids' assignments (actual...

The "no-homework" idea is a good one. Does he get a study hall? I know requirements are really tightening up the school day, but if possible, that's a good idea. Why doesn't the school offer a printer for his laptop? That might help with his assignments. Just how organized is he? Maybe you can go th...

My 10-y-o knows what he likes when he hears it, but we're not musically literate so we're not much help. He does seem to focus better if we have music playing in the background. He will occasionally ask for something specific, but usually won't notice unless he doesn't like what's playing (modern ja...

My 10-y-o boy has always enjoyed his reflection. Even when crying, he'll run to the bathroom to see what he looks like. Even when he was little he'd try to see what he looked like and would extend the crying while watching the different ways he could contort his face.

My DS wants to type but wants to do it his way (hunt & peck) - we already have a typing game here, but he prefers TyperShark. The deluxe version is $20USD, there's a free, limited download and it can be played online at Shockwave.com. It is more fun than the old "Quick brown fox jumped over the ...

Even if he did learn to type, his fingers probably couldn't keep up with his brain anyway. I'm in a similar situation with my child and we've tried dictation, but I can't type that fast (and I'm pretty fast). We tried a tape recorder and that went pretty well, but it still needs to be transcribed. R...

Mom, now that we know I have AS then you should know my clothes are a sensory issue. I would change it if I could but I just can't function in those kinds of clothes. All I can think about is how they're too tight, too small, too rasping. I have to be able to think about other things and not just ab...

I read the Spanish/Mexican people introduced the patio here in the U.S. It's the open, central courtyard surrounded by the house on all four sides. This was originally constructed for ventilation in the desert southwest. Today it's that slab of concrete outside the back door where you put your lawn ...

Ah yes, the "I love you BUT" We're trained to hand out criticism alongside compliments. It's unacceptable to say "What did you do to your hair?" We are trained to say nothing. If asked, we are supposed to say, "Yes, I see you tried a new style. How do you like it?" Criticism is BAD, anything unkind ...

Well, after my son's reaction when we told him, I hope the parents get comfortable enough to tell him. He probably already knows he's "different." But, that's not your place - it's a recent diagnosis, so it does take time to get to know the condition. If you only see him during crowded family times,...
