Right now I don't respond to staring because I know for sure it bothers me but not my son. (He's only four.) I like the idea of waving back at people though; I might teach him to do that later if it starts to bother him. If it was very upsetting to me, I'll vent it later with friends, or a forum lik...

THANK YOU so much for the blog love. I've been on the Wrong Planet forum ever since my son was diagnosed (which was when I started my blog) and I have found it tremendously helpful.
You're right that I am tremendously fortunate to have the Internet as both a resource, and an outlet. |

OK, being isolated is really not good. At least once the school year starts, you will be able to use that time to do more typical toddler stuff with your 17-month old. A lot of what I've been reading involves making visual prompts for AS kids, and that routines are important. So, there would be a po...

PLEASE don't feel bad about what's going on. The fact that you're reaching out for solutions shows me that you're a GREAT mom! I am NT, but when any of my kids were babies, I often felt "touched out" by the end of the day. I had a mother's helper who was 12 when she started. I put the word out to ev...

My son is only four, so like another person said, we're not there yet. I'm already struggling with appropriate, effective discipline that doesn't punish him for having AS and doesn't allow us to use AS as an excuse. I do want to say that I've had some personal experience with in-patient care and it ...

@JCPatriots, when my son was younger -- up until he was about 2-1/2, he flapped. It was an up-and-down flapping of his hands like he was trying to fly away. Now his flapping is usually more of a repeated thigh-slapping. I guess it gives him more sensory input that way. When he's super excited he sti...

Another follow-up. I just realized my (supposedly NT) daughter also does the claw-hands thing. It's fascinating because it seems like it takes so much muscle strength to do it, and yet she has a fine motor skill delay.

The more I read the posts on here, the more I see behavior in the rest of my family (including me) that is spectrum-y. One of my daughters, who is NT, does a lot of finger-flicking and needs to run her hands over textured surfaces too. I asked my son's neurologist if that is what is meant by "broade...

Our pediatric developmental neurologist wants Little Dude to have an MRI. When I asked why, he said that some people with Asperger's can have a particular brain malformation that would preclude contact sports. After surfing the internet, I deduced that he means a Chiari malformation. Does anyone kno...

Thanks, everyone. Right now he's really, really opposed to using the potty, even with major bribery, so I'm going to just back off for a while. Plus, next month we are doing a long (cross-country) car trip, so it's probably better to wait until after that to try again.

| How can they deny services? If she has a diagnosis of autism, she should qualify for OT, PT, etc. The Houston chapter of the Autism Society of America has some detailed information on the Autism Supplement to the Texas Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. | I did a search of the forum and didn't see anything on this topic, except actually one in the adolescent section. My son is 4 yrs and 3 mos. Before his AS diagnosis, I had tried several times to introduce the potty (Potty, this is Little Dude. Little Dude, this is Potty.) We have tried all different... |

I'm new to all this and can't offer any suggestions. I just wanted to say I think you are an AMAZING mom, and you're doing a terrific job of researching and trying new things to help your daughter. It's difficult when things that work one day don't necessarily work the next, and there's no one right...

My son also has a lot of tactile defensiveness. Applying sunblock is a total trauma. My older girls (who are NT) had sensory integration problems, and we did a lot of desensitizing stuff with them in OT. We couldn't do brushing because they also have dermographism, so the brushing stroke actually tr...
