I gradually was able to teach my son to go away to another room when he started screaming and shouting and throwing things - just until he finished melting. He wasn't in control, it wasn't his fault, I knew that. It was only when he was calm that I could explain to him. Try to find a time when your ...

Just wanted to let everyone know that life is mostly normal again - whatever normal is. My boys are talking to each other, my son has a new phone and his dad loves new technology so that has been a common interest for them to share which has got them over the hurdle. I have talked with my son about ...

Thanks Bookworm - I never had him tested for anything. It doesn't matter to me if he;s no good at maths or ball games or anything really, he's wonderful at writing and spelling so that's ok. We all have our strengths. I know that his dad loves him, he just doesn't really understand the issue. This t...

Oh my dear, I cannot begin to imagine your pain. I had a long discussion with my son today and i felt his - tears come to him so quickly when he talks about how useless he feels, and how he goes into meltdown because when his dad tells him he has done something stupid he KNOWS it is because he is. A...

I suspect mine might answer "I am right, and it's not my problem" But thanks, anything is worth trying. Thanks bethaniej - I have come to believe over the years that my h probably has AS to some degree as well which has made his life difficult, but of course he has learned to live with it, and he wi...

That would be brilliant - my son would prob do that easily in fact he is happy to discuss afterwards what happened. But my h is NOT a talker or a writer - he just doesn't, because he is RIGHT, everyone else is WRONG and he has nothing further to add. That's the maddening part. I love him with all my...

He is nearly 19, and he will be at home prob for a while. No job, no prospects on that front for the moment. He is trying to get the last few points for his education certificate this year, and he gets a little social security support money but not enough to go out and live on his own yet. The madde...

Thanks for your comments, anything is always a help. I agree with you that for the Aspie (my son) it IS about an exchange of information. He tries to explain - by screaming and shouting - his point of view. And it seems black and white to him and he can't understand why my h doesn't understand. My h...

It's been such long time and going so well . . . . . I was beginning to think hat some level of maturity was helping him, and my h to understand each other. Yesterday was a meltdown. My h and my son had one of their totally pointless screaming matches over nothing at all and my son did his normal st...

We live out in the country so my son didn't spend any time with friends outside school (not that he had many anyway) but he too found online to be his outlet. He can be his "other" self there, no-one cansee him, he doesn't have to look at them and he gradually learned to be a scoaible person. He is ...

I don't have any knowledge at all about autism and math problems but my son who has Aspergers always struggled. I read recently that the Kumon math program can be helpful. I don't know anything about it - wish I had when he was younger - nor how readily available it is but it might be worth checking...

Having read this I am really glad that I have actually never had my 17 yr old son diagnosed. I am fortunate that my extended family have always accepted and loved all my children just as they are, 'quirks' and all. Really lucky I guess. My h has had the most difficulty but even he seems to be finall...

If their homework's done and their teeth are brushed and their happy, then all is well. Exactly. It really doesn't matter as much as you think it does. Dads and mums ARE different, it would be really boring if we weren't. (Actually I have a friend who has TRAINED her husband from day 1 to be just t...

Just an update - I think that I'm gradually getting through. My h has been making a real effort to understand when I suggest ways to handle our son, and he's shown some real consideration lately for his anxieties about his health which has translated into a much happier boy and a rebuilding of their...

How absurd that there should be such a focus on something that a child clearly has difficulty concentrating on ? I remember that my son's kinder teacher was anxious for the whole year that he didn't want to interact with other children, preferred some specific activities, disliked physical activitie...

It's a bit like juggling hot potatoes at times Pook - just as well one of us in our families is in the middle ground ! (I think :? )

Taking each day as it comes, one step at a time - and learning as much as possible.
