I concur. Lonesome Crowded West is fantastic, as is The Moon and Antarctica. Even the odds and sodds record Building Something Out of Nothing is brilliant. Issac Brock has yet to turn in a really bad record. i see from your avatar that you are a husker du fan. i have a friend who is a husker du obs...

Saw it some time ago, in the late '90s. Back then, it was extremely, even horribly, dated. I can only imagine how it'd be like watching it 30 years later. Consider that Star Wars came out the year after this film was made: comparing the two is like comparing a cave drawing to a color photograph from...

i think Belle and Sebastian could be appealing to those with AS- their songs are very much about awkwardness and outsider-just in a twee way. i love them they're my fave band :) My girlfriend likes them God they suck I can't vouch for anything beyond If You're Feeling Sinister, but that's on...

Thanks for the welcome! I'm not as far south west as Cornwall (yet) - currently just south of Bristol. Hey, I had the opportunity to tour Cornwall *and* Bristol with my family on vacation last May -- my first trip overseas. You're really lucky. Even though the UK struck me as being very expensive, ...

Try to get the dates and times the comments and bullying is happening, then if you do have to take them to court you will have written evidence. I don't mean any disrespect here, but that should be a *last* resort -- and only if things start to get waaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of hand. And I'm a...

These are words from someone else in a conversation to me about something that happened to me recently, but these (very general) remarks might be helpful in this circumstance: "There are some rules around navigating around a-holes that you occasionally encounter in life: - Always do what you feel is...

Tough choice. Loved The Cure as a teenager. Listen to the Smiths. Like New Order. Ditto the Heads, but they're more arty and quirky than AS-y.

Radiohead, past their prime they may be, has probably the "soundtrack" to any sort of paranoidal outsider music with OK Computer and Kid A.

As an ex-journalist and a blogger -- granted, one from Canada -- I can tell you that you'll probably be safe from accusations of copyright theft if you do both of the following: 1) provide a difect HTML link to the story. 2) only copy and paste the *most* relevant parts of the story up for discussio...

I thought I'd share some of this stuff, since everyone needs their fanbase. I'm a Pushcart Prize-nominated writer (and a recent recipient of a fiction writing grant from the city I live in). The following links lead down the rabbit hole to some of my bizzarro, outsider short stories that I've had pu...

I can seriously name a handful of new British bands more deserving of the hype than the AMs, I'm afraid. (I don't hate the Monkeys. I just don't get the hype.):

Futureheads -- you have to hear their cover of Hounds of Love, if you have not yet already. Brilliant.
Bloc Party

Well, I was diagnosed with AS last year. I currently run my own business as a writer/editor. Between maybe 1998 and 2004, I was a freelance journalist. I found it not very difficult, and, in some ways, more preferable to work on my own as a single-source proprietor (non-incorporated). I find I can m...

As someone who has had his share of "fame," no matter how small (I used to be a journalist), I can tell you it ain't what it is cracked up to be. There's something very telling about Reality TV in that anyone can now be famous. But ask yourself this: do you want someone following you around with a c...
