Some of you have probably heard of Prof. Simon Baron-Cohen's theory on ASD being a product of "extreme maleness", which I find is quite controversial... I mean, from a certain point of view, yeah I guess, the obsession with STEM related topics, computers, the directness / bluntness, the l...

A bit of a controversial topic, but one which I feel it's safe to discuss critically here... what are your thoughts on autism spectrum disorder males, and perceived societal violations of gender norms? (I know "violations" might be a bit strong of a word, so maybe let's say "aberratio...

What's the most bizarre question you've ever gotten from someone (and was ostensibly related to your having ASD)? I don't mean the more meathead-bully type questions, like "Are you gay?" or "Are you on drugs?" :x  Because we all know that those aren't genuine questions comi...

I know that obviously a mental health professional can't "cure" or "fix" autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), and I myself find those labels hurtful, so that's that out of the way... but at times, in the past, I've often sensed microaggressions from a "therapist" towards m...

I'm not so sure the neighbor commenting really was a hint about the TV. It's quite possible that the person was just concerned that his dog was too loud. Yeah, in the end, I've got to say that's an ambiguous one...I think it would've had NTs wondering too. :? That's one of the things that comes wit...

I do drop hints but they get missed a lot so I don't know if I'm dropping them hard enough or relying too much on mind reading. I'm too shy and conflict averse at times and that leads to dropping hard to pick-up hints. On the other hand, sometimes people read hints that I didn't actually drop! OK, ...

Like, as if it was some ground-breaking revelation, as if they were stating something profound?? :D :P  To me, this sort of statement has to be one of the most banal things I've ever heard...and I've gotten it more than once. With the NT tendency towards indirect communication, even I sensed t...

If you haven't read "Asperger's Syndrome Workplace Survival Guide" by Barbara Bissonnette, try it. I thought I knew it all by now, and ended up highlighting tips from the very first chapter. Yep, I've read that cover to cover - great read!! ! I read it several years ago, soon after it cam...

I too think the "loser" label for us is unfair. I think it's more objectively applicable to someone who HAS intuitive and intact socio-emotional faculties, but they CHOOSE to be lazy, irresponsible, rude, etc. - those sorts of people really piss me off because they HAVE such inborn faculti...

There are two types of people: - Those who spot a mistake unintentionally and point it out: thank them . - Those who actively hunt for your faults: Ignore them and watch your back . If it's a staff member, never slip up around them, they’re trying to get you fired. Yeah, those second types are insi...

I think a lot of it is processing speed sprinkled with some literal thinking / ToM deficits...been there a few times my brothers and sisters!! It helps to paraphrase back in your own words what you believe was said. Or, in your own words as much as possible, not 100% (watch that literal thinking ;-)...

I would opine as well that this fellow with the dog surely must've noticed that the autistic woman's TV volume would only go up whenever his dog loudly barked, and put two and two together. HE was in the wrong to drop a non-assertive hint like this, rather than disciplining his damn dog as the cause...

Is THIS something an NT would've known right away?? No, I don't think so. An inability to say things like this directly or a reliance on passive hints is a sign of social immaturity (or perhaps social anxiety). I believe it is frustrating to nearly everybody. Ah, thank you for the vote of confidenc...

I know this is a rather unusual topic from the "Aspie perspective", as we typically find ourselves on the [non-] receiving end of missed hints from NTs :P but have you ever had a situation where YOU gave some hint, in NT fashion, and found it was either missed or ignored (or maybe couldn't...

I came across this recent article on "Simply Psychology", snippet pasted below; it concerns a female autistic who took a subtle prompt very literally... but I would dispute whether an NT would've picked up on the hidden message...that is IF the annoyance of the loud TV to her neighbour was...
