After reading this thread I'm pretty sure that Aspergers will not be the basis of a new culture anytime soon. You can't make a culture out of a loosely defined neurological condition. They're already changing the definition for DSM 5 and will surely change it again in DSM 6. Furthermore, there does ...

"Provisional" eh? Don't you just love the ways NTs have of avoiding certainty. :) As for CBT, I've never done it for AS, only anxiety. The CBT for anxiety was very tough at first because I was told to do the exact opposite of what I would normally do. Once I got the hang of it it was VERY helpful.

I rarely experience sensory overload, and I don't experience meltdowns the way others on this board describe them. Although when I was younger, I had fits that my parents would probably describe as meltdowns, though I don't remember how I felt when those happened. I don't take too many things litera...

What's wrong with mild Asperger's? What about other mild conditions? Is there anything wrong with mild schizophrenia or mild dyspraxia or mild ADD, or mild dyslexia or mild retardation or mild Bipolar or mild asthma, etc? I don't understand why mild is a bad thing. I think when people say they have...

It took me a long time too and I still have some problems. I don't remember specifically what I did but I kept practicing and didn't give up. One common problem for Aspies is estimating distances between yourself and other cars. You may want to ask your instructor for special assistance in this area.

In addition to experience she probably also would have asked for a drug test, credit check, and college transcript. |

I usually get a good feeling when a conversation gets going and I feel I understand the other person and am being understood. However, I'm really not that conscious of the feelings of the other person. I agree with izzeme that there's a "vibe" I get from other people that lets me know if they are sa...

Bergie, your overall symptom/personality profile seems very similar to mine. I went in for a four-hour evaluation with a doctor with experience on the Autism spectrum, and he said he had no doubt that I was on the Autism spectrum. There was no need to wait two weeks. I'd say give this doctor a chanc...

Getting diagnosed by two doctors is twice as many as I have. Unless you've been "un-diagnosed" by at least as many doctors, you can tell anyone and everyone you have Aspergers with no guilt. I agree with Draelynn, go out there an "own" your diagnosis.

I'm learning you don't overcome the social difficulties, you learn there are better people to socialize with. I'm part of an Aspie support group and find it's much easier to make friends there than in the real world. I've also learned to seek out other people with similar interests and/or those who ...

I think there's a general idea out there that difficult pregnancies can lead to AS. And pregnancies that are close together can be more difficult, I guess. In my case, I was one of twins and my mother was very sick both at the beginning and end of the pregnancy. The doctor who diagnosed me believes ...

I finally got around to watching AI last week. When the interview with James came on I could immediately tell that he is the one with AS. It's just something in the way that he talks. I've met several guys in AS support groups who act a lot like him. But the performance was amazing, totally unexpect...
