My wife who is schizophrenic took abilify and it was an absolute disaster as it did not control her delusional thinking. That said she did seem to like it and it made her happy in a spaced out sort of way. As you are depressed and other medication does not appear to have helped, I can't see why you ...

It is a generational thing I think, although maybe harder for someone with ASD tendencies. For what it is worth the two people who on one occasion each got angry at our kids were the respective grandfathers, Grandmothers and stepgrandmother were always nice. I think people who grew up in the depress...

Hmm - hope the holiday is going well despite these difficulties! I have to say that it does seem your daughter is being rather unnecessarily difficult and a bit of a "little queen". However some leeway needs to be given, given her ASD. When I was a kid we had to eat everything that was on our plates...

Funny, it was my NT daughter who was terrible to get to sleep, My ASD son was a dream - when he was little I once got up to find that he had been sick and thrown up all over his bedclothes, then gone back to sleep, all without making a peep or waking us up.

Thanks for comments - looks like it might be a vision issue as well as an autism issue. Well he enjoyed the movie but said the 3d distracted from the story which he consequently found hard to follow (but that was a common criticism in reviews of this movie (Prometheus) anyway. I will just need to re...

My son wanted to see Prometheus the new sci fi blockbuster. Given he is rarely enthusiastic about things I bought him a ticket to see it, and chose the 3d film over the 2d as it as from reviews the 3d is not gimicky here and I thought obviously 3d is better than 2d. When I told him he had a ticket f...

I don't think my son's reading issue is with not understanding the social side of things - I tried him with literally everything, some literal and straightforward accounts, some not, many humerous - he just was never that interested. His remedial English course at school is quite good - there are no...

@zette - my daughter asks the same question - why do I work long hours in a business for little reward? There is merit in this; however there are reasons - I am in my mid fifties and have worked for myself for many years; it will be hard for me to get a job elsewhere at this time of my life. I have ...

My biggest fear is that my son will not be able to make the transition to the normal adult life and that his life will be unsatisfactory in consequence. There is undoubtedly a significant risk that he cannot get a job, or at least an adequate job, that he will not be able to find a partner, and that...

I'm afraid I can't add too much. I came from a family of readers with my parents having a home library of many hundreds of volumes on all topics. With my mainly NT daughter (with a touch of ASD) at about seven she started with Harry Potter and she was off. She just loves to read and this has undoubt...

Hi Catbalou Didn't know you were also a sole parent - it is a time consuming business - hope all is going well with you and your daughter. Thanks for your very relevant suggestions which are very valuable! With the pre-preparing of meals I (as an unskilled male!) ran into some problems with that eg ...

Oh, you said something I wanted more detail on if you don't mind sharing. You said that your son steals his lunch food and you have to hide it away. What is the context of this type of situation? Is he just hungry or do you have food issues?? No problem. He does not have any particular serious food...

Quite interesting results of my two kids on the aspie quiz. Firstly my successful apparently NT daughter scored 88 Aspie, 123 NT - showing traits of both Aspie and NT (her Aspie score was higher than my 60). This is an interesting example of someone with some Aspie traits who has found ways to cope ...

Yes Oddfiction that was a helpful comment. My son frequently comes across as quite grumpy even when I am being completely reasonable. Once his NT sister had to point out to him that I was defending him when he thought I was attacking him. Once at a meeting with the dean examining whether he should e...

@DW_a_mom Yes I think that is the real problem - not enough time. Part of the problem is that I am away until nearly 10pm every weekday evening and so my son is usually left to his own devices at home from 4pm this then - about six hours each evening. When I come back I am cooking meals etc and it i...

Confusednewb - a moment's search on google gave - http://pediatrics.about.com/od/autism/l/bl_autism.htm And there are doubtless others Thinking about it my results are a little puzzling as I was close to borderline autistic on the Baron-Cohen test but pretty much NT on the Aspie quiz - shows the unc...
