Do you mean your personal identity or my personal identity? I suppose that both could be invalidated if you criticize my post. It was a private joke at my own expense. I have largely lost respect for my identity and yet I can't stop pretending and trying to make an impression. It just popped into m...

but what do you do to reach out to others, when the sorrow you are feeling is there but not your own and you can't make it go away? :( I post an excerpt of my sad life story to a random forum on the internet, like this one, trying and failing to relate and mean something to someone. Then I go to be...

Generally, I don't consider criticism to be a bad thing. I don't consider criticism of self-diagnosis any different than criticism of official diagnosis or criticism of autism research or criticism of some other process. If people feel that criticism of self-diagnosis invalidates their personal ide...

Not sure which anaesthetic they gave you, but if it was Ketamine, that might explain it. It's being studied as an antidepressant.

Yeah, it's things that don't seem to bother other people as much. Things that are a part of these higher paying jobs ("responsibility" would probably cover a lot of it fairly well). And also I get to a point where I just don't understand what I'm supposed to do, and I don't get the right answers wh...

Is it better to strive to utilise my intelligence to succeed financially like most people strive to do, or is it okay to choose to "waste" my intelligence and put my health first, being severely underpaid for the rest of my life? It really depends on how severe your mental health issues are. There'...

As Drew Carey once said, " Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support group for that. It's called EVERYBODY... " There's a difference between not liking your job and not being able to handle the stress and office politics to the point that you get depressed and lose the ability...

From the description you gave, it sounds like "life". Nobody is happy, motivated and focused 24/7. In general, when you have depression, the suffering tends to be a lot more intense and long-lasting and it prevents you from enjoying things you would normally enjoy. That said, it can't hurt taking a ...

I also have the same problem as the OP. I have been thinking about it and asking myself, "Do you really want a relationship, or do you just feel that you want a relationship?" I am still pondering this question. There may be times when we're better off alone, when we might not be ready for a relati...

You are "beyond insulted" that "only 5" people clicked a button on the internet in response to the groundbreaking news that you'll be going to NY? Are you expecting people to throw you a parade for that?
I'll never understand this weird popularity contest that is Facebook. |

I'd suggest talking to people who do the work you can imagine doing to get a better idea what it's really like. E.g. for staying in academia whether you need to network a lot, whether there is a lot of pressure to get 3rd party funding or whether that's relatively easy in your field. I think if ther...

For the anxiety and depression, I'd look into alternatives like tianeptine ( interesting study here and here ) and buspirone. Since they have a different mechanism of action than the reuptake inhibitors you've taken, these might be less likely to trigger hypomania. Your psychiatrist may be sceptical...

There are all kinds of things that impair cognitive abilities, e.g. lack of sleep, chronic stress, anxiety issues, sensory overload, lack of physical activity, certain medications. There's also the psychological effect of being part of a larger community with ... |
