I'd ask the person to tell me when they're ready: "I need some space for a while." "Okay. I'll wait for you to reach out when you're ready." I'd prepare myself for the possibility that I might not hear from them again. When people say they need space, I think it's sometimes a hin...

I've heard people mention their parenthood in terms of having done their duty for society. That doesn't necessarily mean it was a major reason for them. They could have just been acknowledging it in hindsight as a byproduct. For me, duty to society doesn't factor into the decision. Many people feel ...

There is another option if your clinician is up for it. I call it an unofficial diagnosis. ThoughtProcess has had a version of it. Find a qualified clinician have that person says in their professional opinion you are autistic. You save money because a diagnostic report need not be written. If you ...

A well designed test will ask questions in multiple ways to detect inconsistencies and other indications that the subject is faking. That doesn't mean that it's impossible to fake your way to a diagnosis, but that the medical establishment is well aware of that possibility and most certainly takes a...

Update to my post above: I spoke with the new psychologist about thinking I might have ASD, and he agreed with the previous psychologist that a formal assessment probably wouldn't be worth it at this point in my life. He made it clear that if I really wanted an assessment, he'd give me a referral. B...

I'm not a picky eater in terms of tolerance. Not many typical foods would nauseate me. But I do have fairly strong preferences and usually find only one or two appealing dishes on a restaurant menu. But overall I can eat a wide variety of food. My son is quite picky. For him, it's more a matter of t...

What makes you think they had kids because they thought they were expected to, rather than it being an active choice? I'm not doubting you, because you know them and I don't. There are plenty of people who have children because they think it's a societal expectation. I'm just wondering what gives yo...

I let my OCD get the better of me in some of my hobbies, and I spent more money than I should have by pursuing upgrades to equipment that I really didn't need to upgrade and should have happy with. I recovered some of the money by selling the equipment I wanted to upgrade, but it was still at a sign...

You could point out to them that disabilities are no less limiting than some people's personalities.

I'm sorry to hear you're being treated like this. If teaching certain skills is part of her job description, it's unprofessional of her to blow off people she doesn't feel like teaching. Maybe you could ask a manager if there's somebody else you could see for language tutoring, because this particul...

I'm most comfortable communicating in writing. In most settings, especially a professional setting, that of course has its limits. At work, I push myself to pick up the phone or visit somebody in person when I should, if only to prevent myself from becoming too averse to speaking.

When I got into PCs, 3.5 inch floppy disks were common, 5.25 inch floppy disks were pretty much phased out for personal use, and 8 inch floppy disks were all but forgotten. I had around 30 floppy disks with programs on them. I had sheets of floppy disk labels that I could run through my printer, and...

Some people prefer that lifestyle, and you'd probably have to be similarly built if you want to be in that crowd. For most other people, it doesn't matter. I spent some time lifting weights in pursuit of that muscular look. Looking back on it, I spent too much mental energy on it. These days, my app...

Double Retired, thanks for your helpful reply. PassingThrough, There was very little my memory was a factor. And preparing to respond in an Autistic way would probably have been counter-productive. You cooperate and be honest with the assessor. You want an accurate diagnosis and that's their job. My...

A psychologist I was seeing for anxiety said he thought I probably had autism (I raised the question), but that it wouldn't be worth pursuing a diagnosis at this point. One of his reasons was the possibility of a "false negative." It's a fair point, but I think somebody looking for a diagn...

Teens and twenty-somethings often have a rebellious stage and want to be unique and edgy. The wannabe communist thing is fertile ground for that. It makes people feel like they know better. Of course, that's not everybody who goes on about communism and anti-capitalism. I've met some young people wh...
