I know you did not ask for advice, but I thought you might enjoy this video about the power of introversion...perhaps you can share it with your relative so that she/he might understand your desire to be alone a little better and understand her/his own bias about being around people: http://www.ted....

My Aspie husband and I began this journey over a year ago and we have both learned a lot about ourselves and each other. Through extensive communication, we were able to figure out what each other's needs and limits are. We do not expect things from each other that we cannot provide...while at the s...

Here is a paper I wrote on the topic: Overcoming the Tyranny of Neuronormativity https://www.academia.edu/3111970/Overcoming_the_Tyranny_of_Neuronormativity_A_cross-cultural_Approach Abstract Individuals with Asperger’s syndrome and other Autism Spectrum conditions are labeled as having a disorder. ...

I am an NT and a doctoral student in Organizational Communication. I wrote this essay for a class in Communication Theory. This is written for a presumably NT audience that may not know anything about AS culture, communication, issues. I'd love to get some feedback on it from WP people! The Tyranny ...

Hello! I'm an NT woman married to an AS man. I'm also a graduate student and decided to take a risk by bridging my personal and academic worlds. I just finished writing a paper for a class (not yet sure if I'm going to try to publish it somewhere...kinda depends on the feedback I get). I'm looking f...

I've read something similar to the examples you used in Maxine Austin's book. It's really hard for Aspies to navigate the world, especially with sarcasm, double meanings, etc. I personally think people who can't express their anger through jabs, insults, etc. like neurotypicals do, they end up bott...

I'm an NT. I've been doing a lot reading here on WP about Aspies who seem to get angry a lot in their relationships (maybe just with NTs). Come to think of it, I've only read about anger in Aspie men....don't recall seeing anything about Aspie women having anger outbursts. My Aspie husband has alway...

Please share your experiences, questions, concerns or comments. I am new to this site and have recently found out my husband of 23 years has aspergers. I have done a lot of reading up and visiting other websites, but I need help to understand this complex reality from someone who is also living it....

Sometimes takes many years for the simplest things to be drawn out or understood even though I know something perfectly well in the abstract sense. Honestly, I think the problem is that language is so limited in its ability to convey what it represents...our thoughts, feelings, emotions. These thin...

However, you do not have AS, and just because you don't doesn't mean that your needs aren't just as important as his. You have just as much a right to feel content with your marriage as he does. If you have been together for more than 3 years, I have to wonder why suddenly he needs his own apartmen...

Thanks so much for the replies! It is so interesting...I never thought before of the difference between "time alone" and one's own space. These are definitely needs. I guess it's hard to conceptualize a need that one does not have...but we use the next closest thing. So, as I said, i really can rela...

I'm NT...my husband and I recently figured out that he is Aspie...big time. This knowledge has been very helpful to us as a couple and to him as an individual. In this process of figuring out what he needs (to balance out a life time of coping mechanisms that completely drained him), he moved in to ...

Aspies have been made to feel that THEY are the bad ones, the difficult ones, the wrong ones. This is a form of internalized oppression. It took me a very long time to realize that, kudos to you and your husband. When you're trying to play normal for so long, it really shuts you off from people you...

So 6 months after our 5-year marriage imploded, we figured out that my husband is Aspergian. I always suspected he was an alien because he was just too perfect. Now, I understand that he was trying so hard to be just that. What he didn't realize (nor did I) was the cost of that perfection. He finall...
