My friend has been diagnosed with ADHD. She thinks she’s also on the autism spectrum but has learned to mask so well that it’s very unlikely she would get a diagnosis now. Is that true? Surely if you are autistic then it can be picked up at any age, even if it presents itself differently. A lot of t...

I’m 48 and never had or wanted a girlfriend. Every now and then in my life however I have developed a crush on someone and it’s really painful for me. I thought I was a heterosexual subset of asexual but now I’m not too sure. I have developed feelings for someone I work with but they are very happy ...

I really struggle to understand myself. Some other people on the spectrum seem to be able to read up on autism and recognise the signs in themselves and gain an understanding about themselves because of that. I really struggle with this. Other people can identify my difficulties but I can’t. I have ...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: I am really hyper sensitive. Is this a trait of Aspergers?

I mean sensitive to the things people say and I do take many things personally and replay them over and over in my head. I am not sure if this is a part of having Aspegers or if this something else.

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: I have little interest in the world? Is this because of AS?

I’m so happy in my own little world. Some time’s major world events have happened and I barely know the details. I’m in my own world and my own place. Is this a part of autism (in my case AS)?

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Do you find counselling helpful?

I always feel it’s a waste of time. Maybe I expect too much and expect people to explain to me the world works but it seems there’s very little a counsellor can do to help autism.

I’m still baffled by people as much as I ever was. Despite the fact I’m supposed to be intelligent I never learn the social stuff. For instance, if people talk over me in a meeting I still assume it’s a failing in me and my poor social skills or it’s because I’m inept in some way and assume it’s my ...

I am really struggling to understand the difference between being nice and a pushover. What I really struggle with is the fact that we live in a world that is so selfish and inconsiderate. What others see as setting boundaries I feel is being a jerk when I do the same. I want to be altruistic and gi...

I’m coming up to 42 years old and am still so polite and considerate to others and feel so embarrased about having to confront others, even when they deserve it. I’m such a big empath too, contrary to the autism stereotype. I’ve had my moments don’t get me wrong where I’ve really blown my stack but ...

You’re not a coward at all. You’re the victim of a crappy situation with little support and limited options. Many of us have been in the same boat. Please don’t be too hard on yourself. I do wish you the best of luck with this.

Does anyone believe the NAS apologies are sincere? I lived in their care homes for years and raised these issues but nobody was even interested. Now a major scandal erupts and suddenly ‘lessons must be learned’.

I personally don’t. I believe I’m as autistic as it gets, but don’t have an additional learning disability. Always seems strange to me that people see the more able people on the spectrum as being less autistic. What’s your view?

They seem to let so many people down and don’t practice what they preach in their campaigns etc and don’t accept any kind of challenge. Who are they even accountable to?

I know this is not a straight forward question to ask, but I am incredibly intimidated around others but also hyper conscious of not hurting anyone. Sometimes it has led to people taking advantage and then (after bottling it all up) I can be known to explode. I feel any sort of rudeness or non-polit...
