...and I make a lot of them at work, is that I don't add any datapoints I don't think I'll have a use for or will want to sort by. I can't think of anything the "Date of Sign in" would be useful for in THIS PARTICULAR case, so I wouldn't add it.

If you know it was active on her (YOUR friend's) account then the ESN is clean. If you can't be sure it's been active on your friend's account, I'd seriously wonder. If your phone is very old, aren't you out of contract and elegible for a new phone? Can't you just get one of the free or almost free ...
