All the bold bits signify to me red flags for autism, the underlined bit sounds just like my daughter who has HFA. She is already at increased risk of autism as you are on the spectrum yourself. It's not too early to start enquiring about assessment for her and the earlier you can get any intervent...

The current forum software is not under active development therefore new features won't be added, but may be noted for consideration in later versions. Ah right yes. I have no idea what the extend is of configuration options in forums like these, but figured it might be worth a try. Thank you for k...

Hi, First off, great site, I'm happy to find something like this exists. However I don't frequent this forum, mainly because the long list in the forum index overwhelms me. I manage by opening the subfora I'm interested in in tabs, but there are days when even having to scroll down that list to do s...

But then, while Brains continued to run toward the kids, my older son stopped. He threw out his arms in the big, dramatic gesture, and yelled: "Wow! The sidewalk is amazing! The squares go on a really long way! How are they sparkling?" and proceeds to spend the next five minutes examining the concr...

I agree with the 'mom-and-daughter time' comments but I think that's been sufficiently pointed out already :) Your daughter sounds as if she fits the label of gifted. However, have you ever had her assessed for Asperger's or ADHD? Girls with Asperger's often present differently to males. She is at h...

My guess is that with the longer school day she will find it more of a strain and will need even more recovery time than she does now. Don't enroll her in any after-school activities for at least the first semester. We made the mistake with my son of trying to continue OT, soccer, and social skills...

I've read a few things here that could perhaps be combined into a workable scenario. We do have a local school that is part of our state university, and they do have dorms now but I worry that he will be too close to home. He has shown no interest in learning to drive, or have a license. Telling him...

That's one of the things that bugs me about comments on lacking empathy. He may struggle with theory of mind, but he has a strong sense of fairness, always thinking of other, sensitivity to people and animals being hurt, and a loving heart. Saying someone lacks empathy makes them seem cold. Which h...

My daughter will be starting school soon. In terms of learning I suspect she'll love that there will be some more advanced topics available. She's a smart cookie :) Up till now she's been doing fine in groups of up to 15 children, but school will be busier. I think her class will have about 25 child...

I sometimes experience things in slow motion. These moments coincide with intense situations or extreme tiredness. I can snap out of it if something vitally requires my proper attention, for example if I need to watch out before crossing a road or if my daughter needs me. That drains energy though. ...

It looks pretty good to me :) One thing I'd like to see added is visibility and/or energy. I'm one of the - according to some - lucky few who gets by mostly unnoticed. Yes that means I have the act down to a tee, I can even ace the mind in the eyes test. However, this will always be an analysis rath...

My 3yo daughter has some traits that I recognize but I'm unsure she would qualify for a diagnosis at this point. For now I'm just waiting to see how she'll do in school. I figure that me knowing that this may be the case will already make part of the difference. If it seems like she'll need more (ou...

I really don't think it's fair to blame your mum. She listened to the expert's advice. Probably true. That said, "she couln't help it because she didn't know any better" is not the same as "you are not allowed to feel bad/sad/angry over this". I made the mistake of mixing those up and trying to abs...

Wow, Ivasha - we must be siblings. My Mom uses those same two phrases all the time. Ooh I have transcontinental family? Awesome! :) I moved 600 miles away and screen all my phone calls. Wish I could find a more grown-up way to handle it, but you are right, it is incredibly draining. I'm pretty sure...

So, to answer WTF - I answer: possibly she has whatever you are diagnosed with, minus any effective interventions either as a child or as an adult, and plus whatever co-morbid mental illnesses were brought on by the stress of covering up any struggles or differences to the outside world. If you're ...
