LOL! Thrush is the term for a yeast infection in the baby's mouth. From what you've shared it's probably not an issue.

Ok, then. Probably one of my biggest pet peeves has to do with family. I am SO sick of people who SHOULD have some emotional connection DON'T and offer uninformed advice they see on TV or the Internet instead of putting any real effort into understanding our son's own particular challenges. In fact,...

I'm not sure how this ties in to autism but this is clearly not something behavioral in an infant. They are eating, sleeping and pooping machines with immature nervous, digestive and immune systems. I haven't read any of your post history so I have to assume that either you or your wife is on the sp...

Yeah, I know it's not good to just explode. i also know that sometimes diligence requires that you essentially become a burr in someone's backside so that things get done. Lord knows there have been times when I feel the Spurs in my side if I don't act in a timely manner. I guess I just need to find...

...or does it just erode or destroy any sort of respect from others? I try to bite my tongue but I can only bottle it up for so long. When is it okay to speak your mind with regards to judgemental strangers, clueless relatives or unmotivated therapists?

I don't have much to contribute since we're struggling with this with our 11 yo son but a lot of it makes sense - even the "reverse meltdown." Unfortunately, my son's outbursts aren't always self-directed. I'm going to enact some of the strategies that came up. A lot of it reminds me of th...

Is the aide new? Does your child's school charter the bus from another school district or private busing company? Does the aide have any sort of therapeutic background or are they just a warm body hired off the street? Personally, I'd talk to the school and have them talk to whomever is responsible ...

From what I was told when we had wraparound, they are not authorized to toilet train. That is a nursing function, not a therapeutic function. The bigger issue here is the son's noncompliance with his mother. If she is not consistent or is not able to positively motivate him to take care of his own t...

Thanks for the update. I'm sorry some of these posts upset you, but with regards to free advice - especially on the Internet - sometimes you get what you pay for and most times what you get isn't what you even asked for, much less need. My son is a serial hitter but that's because he's nonverbal. Yo...

It sounds like you're juggling hand grenades. I'm not judging as I'm right there with you. My two boys are also 3 years apart but the older one is lower functioning and "intellectually disabled" with sensory issues (ASD, MRU, ADHD, SPD, OCD, etc.) that his younger brother (not yet diagnose...

Thanks, I'm actually a bit anxious. My son is 11, nonverbal, partly incontinent with anxiety/frustration-based aggression. Since he was in kindergarten he was in a wonderfully supportive private school for children with behavioral issues that weren't necessarily all related to autism but he has aged...

FWIW I agree that 3 years old is too young to put a child on medication, though I have had my son on meds since age 4. I was told that it was to be just one avenue of "treatment" but once they're on drugs you can't seem to get them off them. You might want to look at the larger picture and...

Are you saving up for your child's college? If so, then potentially you could use that to establish a special needs trust.

Getting back to the original story, this unfortunately illustrates the need for activism and advocacy, not just awareness - not only in our antiquated education system but in all aspects of life here in the US.

My son was prescribed Risperdal at around age 5 to combat a biting compulsion that in hindsight was (and still is) triggered by sudden loud noises and frustration issues associated with being nonverbal. It would work satisfactorily for awhile then lose its effectiveness so the doctor would increase ...
