I am a black person who has been diagnosed (though not fully accepting). I'm guessing culture may affect both how it is expressed and how it is perceived. Based on my experiences growing up, we kids were not expected to talk much to our parents. We were spoken to, but there was no expectation of re... |

I don't think I would feel kinship with most AS folks either. I have my doubts about my diagnosis, but I don't doubt that I have a problem. Treating the problem, in my opinion, is more important than finding the perfect label for it. If my therapist thinks I have AS and she wants to help me cope wit... |

I don't have a smoking gun, but the thing that led me to being diagnosed was my catatonia. Catatonia isn't just an autism thing, as it is associated with mood disorders and schizophrenia. But I don't have schizophrenia. My depression is quite mild, especially now that I'm on a working anti-depressan... |

Apartness. Separateness from the universe. And disconnected from self as well. I used to think it was just a glass wall just separating me from everything else. But the wall is also inside me, preventing me from understanding how I'm feeling and why. What complicates matters is that it's largely sel... |

I'm fine with people thinking I'm just quirky. I don't strive for 100% normal--which would require inventing friends, lovers, normal interests etc. The only thing I manufacture is interest. When someone talks to me about mundane things, I pretend to care. I laugh at jokes that I don't find funny, I ... |

I am only slightly underemployed. I intentionally sought a job that I was overqualified for, so that I didn't have to deal with stuff that I'm not really cut out for. People in my life are a little disappointed that I don't work harder, but this is my life. I wouldn't have it any other way. I get to... |

Alexithymia is a symptom. It's like you are asking how do people know the difference between Asperger's and stimming. Stimming is a part of the syndrome, even though not all people with Asperger's stim. I'm alexithymic. It is impossible for me to know if I'm alexithymic because this is just the way ... |

There seem to be some misconceptions in this thread. Research is finding that individuals classified as being on the schizophrenia spectrum have an "atypical" neurology--and that signs arise early in development. The same neurolocial soft signs that autistic people exhibit are also found in schizoid... |

What is bothering you, specifically? I can tell you that I was able to get psychiatric assistance with no magical diagnosis. I went to the doc with my therapist's note saying I was depressed (which I was) and that I had some other stuff (problems walking, restlessness, repetitive thoughts, etc.). He... |

Based on the reactions from people I got when I "came out" as schizoid, I shall not be doing the same thing with my latest diagnosis. It's not even that I didn't fulfill the criteria. It's just that it's was too creepy of an idea to believe. How can I have problems with empathy? Only monsters lack e... |

I don't recall doing anything repetitive as a kid. But when I turned 21, I started stimming. It's taken more than 10 years to admit that this is the best term to describe my "habits", though. Before I thought they were tics--something totally out of my control. I DO have tics, but I also think I sti... |

I've never been attached to anyone. For the first 30 years of my life, it was such an insignificant thing that I didn't spend much time thinking about it. But then I started working around non-academic, "regular" people, and I realized how odd my alone-ness and detachment was. I started to think abo... |

I don't get along with any particular gender, just individuals. But I think I would prefer a woman as a friend.
I am not into stereotypical feminine things, but I'm not masculine either. I'm androgynous. |

"If you would just look people in the eye, you would be able to make a friend."
My therapy said this to me at my last session. |
