Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Best 5-point scale book for adults? (dealing with anxiety)

I recently leafed through a book on the 5-point scale (http://5pointscale.com) and even though I only read a few pages, the 5 point scale has been probably the most useful technique I've ever learned for dealing with anxiety and other difficult emotions. I'm looking to find and read a book to unders...

When I was growing up, I was definitely one of the most honest kids I knew. My mother says that whenever she needed to find out which kid did something bad, she could just ask me and I would tell her. Looking back, I didn't learn the socially accepted reasons and ways of lying, so I didn't have the ...

I guess the solution would be to try to learn and see if it came more naturally to you than to other Aspies. The trouble, though, is that after a long time of social isolation, it WOULD be hardwired--whether or not it was to begin with! People who are right on the diagnostic threshold like that can...

Eye contact is one of the few Aspie issues that I don't have a problem with. I've had a LOT of eye contact training since I stutter and most all stuttering therapies involve eye contact work. For me eye contact feels reassuring; I know my listener is paying attention to me. I know this has probably ...

Yes. Before I realized I was an Aspie, I used to call myself a "Lazy Perfectionist". Meaning I want things to be perfect, ordered, simple, complete. But if it's difficult to make that happen I get frustrated and give up, so lazy in terms on not sticking with things that don't come naturally. I get a...

I scored 12 correct, which was surprising since while I was doing the test it felt like I was getting them almost all right. Something that Tony Attwood said about the Baron Cohen test is that Adult Aspies can do well, but they take longer (e.g. 5 seconds) to make choices whereas NTs make the choice...

Many of the ASD symptoms can be caused simply by lack of socialization. As an extreme example, I would assume that the kids who grew up locked up in closets would end up being pretty autistic, whether they were wired that way starting out or not. I'm a stutterer, and because of that, I've not had as...

I remember reading somewhere that big foreheads are associated with AS, and I certainly have a big forehead:

At various times I've been concerned that changes to my diet or health may be causing me to have bad breath. But since we can't smell our own breath, and it's not polite to ask others how your breath smells, how do people determine when they have bad breath?

For me, things changed big time once I realized I had AS, a few years ago as an adult. Before that, I was scared and resentful of criticism. But once I realized that I had AS and had problems knowing what others were thinking about me, all of a sudden I became very interested in hearing how people a...

There seem to be two main kinds of diagnoses... either someone gets a bunch of standardized neuropsychological tests and those point to ASD, or the person just talks with a psychiatrist or psychologist who subjectively decides they are have an ASD. I personally think I'd put more weight in someone w...

This well written essay on how it's bad to tell children lies:

struck me as something an aspie (attached to literal truth) might write. The author is ubergeek Paul Graham.

I get this alot. My obsessive nature means I have a very neat and stylish apartment for a male, mostly because I obsess over getting everything just the way I want it. I never learned the aggressive male stance that most males seem to learn "by osmosis" with other males. I hardly ever try to escalat...

I find that I have a tendency to send out nonverbal signals indicating "don't talk to me". Which is often my attitude, feeling like I really don't want to talk with strangers. But sometimes I want to be friendly and no matter how much I smile or make eye contact, strangers still avoid talking to me....
