I've been told that sometimes I mouth words or whisper quietly under my breath and I've realized that this happens when I'm lost in thought. The almost constant stream of imagined conversations or compositions that pass through my consciousness get subvocalized and sometimes this becomes almost audi...

I didn't only have my parents around, I also had three surviving grandparents living in the same street and an adult sister, and all of whom saw it as their calling to discipline me. I also had problems with disliking certain types of food and having a poor appetite, and it felt like every mealtime ...

I'm high functioning AS, but was in deep denial for a very long time, as my family are (still). It was only when two different, and knowledgeable, people I trust pointed certain things out in the kindest possible way after I'd had some workplace trouble that I sought to find out more about this cond...

What I hate is when they ask a question but don't give enough time for me to finish the whole answer I was going to give. Perhaps this ties in with the question of not knowing how much of an elaborate answer is expected? What happened a couple of times that I can remember was the interviewer asking ...

One of the people I work for wrote in an evaluation form "Miss Moneypenny is not the most social of people..." The main area of adjustment I would wish to see is not to be evaluated on how "social" I am perceived to be. While I find this remark discriminatory, it is a grey area because only HR and a...

In a word - yes. I have our firm's support staff appraisal form right here and the categories against which staff are evaluated are: - Client service - Job knowledge - Technical skills - Organisational skills and initiative - Quality of work - Adaptability and flexibility - Communication skills - Te...

Interruptions, and never being left alone to focus on the current task. When people will insist on trying to explain the next task when I'm currently in the middle of something, I find it hard to switch gears in my head fast enough to absorb those instructions. I either have to write down what they'...

It would have made certain things so much easier. I was born in the late sixties. They knew that "something" was different about me at school, and twice I was pulled out for testing. The educational psychology service only seemed able or willing to test for learning difficulties, and when it was pro...

I hated school - it was boring and I was bullied terribly and I left as soon as possible. I couldn't stand having to get up at an unnatural hour to be somewhere I didn't want to be, doing things I didn't want to do and with people I didn't want to be with. Work is just the same. Yes, you can argue t...

Yeah, I feel the same about myself, too. How could my parents not have suspected some disorder in my brain? Not that my parents are neglectful or anything. I couldn't ask for better parents actually. I guess it could be that they didn't want to admit something was wrong with me or they weren't even...

I had a really weird experience on the way home from work involving some people I've never seen in my life before. I needed to use the cash machine. A man was already using it, and I went and stood at the edge of the privacy box behind him to wait my turn. Three women had been hovering around talkin...

I had no problems with the GP, he was lovely and very understanding. I had taken along a lot of test data to show him - the Aspie quiz, another online test I had done, various personality tests and my WAIS-IV that a career advice psychologist had done etc. The GP agreed to refer me straight away and...

Thanks, Yellowbanana. I just hope that the OH people realise that it's not counselling I need (I'm quite comfortable in my own skin thank you), I just need a quiet place to sit and work where I'm not distracted/interrupted constantly, and to be appreciated for my skills and knowledge instead of havi...

I told my elderly mother about my recent AS diagnosis and she is still in denial, even though she acknowledges that my behaviour and symptoms fit the profile of AS. She wanted to know if the psych had read my medical notes before diagnosing me, and whether I had mentioned this in the interview. I sa...

Unfortunately, other jobs all want the same "Personality Factor X". Unless I can find a way into some other type of work completely where being Mrs. Data isn't a big deal, I'll just end up getting more of the same at another organization. And where I won't have the modicum of protection I have here ...
