I'm not sure how it is elsewhere, but some libraries around here have recently abandoned the Dewey Decimal System in favour of vague grouping. The books still have their classification, but they'll put them with other books sort of related. You don't get a nice progressing 001 to 999 arrangement. It...

First, that is f*****g horrendous, to embarass you like that, to take away your control. It's one thing in private one-to-one moments - bad, but at least showing some discretion - but to share it like that is awful, and you have my sympathies. I'm wary of speaking ill of her, but it really seems you...

We separated for a while, but are back together. She is bipolar and observed the other day that, though not sure what she might come under, she's not NT. But for my part: A (perceived) lack of empathy, and of being unemotional. I care, but my way of caring is to try and resolve whatever the upset is...

The two most common here - that first, it is just way too intimate. There's a Douglas Coupland quote... ah, found it. It's from 'Hey Nostradamus!': “Jason once told me that eye contact is the most intimacy two people can have -- forget sex -- because the optic nerve is technically an extension of th...

For me, the notions that we lack empathy and are unemotional are the worst. Would that they were true - the pain and trouble it would save!

And then the lack of humour and imagination, and that we're either savants or ret*d (or both).

And then the computer/science/sci-fi stuff. Not me.

A big ol' 'yes' to this. I have a way of processing things that's different to the majority. In some ways it puts me at an advantage, in some a disadvantage. I am still a human being, with a subconscious and drives and emotions, not the embodiment of pure rationality. All else being equal, using log...

Something about this question reminds me of John Lennon's response when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world - "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles".

How would intelligence be defined here, and would we recognise it?

Ugh, such nonsense!

It's 'if God were one of us'.

Socialist, and have been as long as ever considered that sort of thing. I remember ranting at my mother how the bus service would be better if it weren't private, aged 12. Though I moved to a more liberal-left position under the influence of my then-conservative wife, I've moved back to the left and...

Tindersticks - Mistakes

Ah, my misspent youth...

Starts off depressing, but the way the music builds and yearns is exquisite (in the painful sense).

Do you know who it's with - a psychiatrist or psychologist? I saw a psychiatrist at first, who rattled through a one hour assessment (as well as wondering about Asperger's, I was very depressed with suicidal ideation and a long history of psychological maladjustment) - he dismissed Asperger's as I'd...

My sleep patterns can get very messed up if I let them - luckily I don't have much chance nowadays. My preferred pattern would to go to bed about 2 or 3 in the morning and get up between 10 and 11. Even with a solid 8 hours from, say, 11 to 7, I am not much good before 10 in the morning. I prefer no...

God, I do love Futurama. Nothing else cracks me up in quite the same way. The Honking. - The fortune teller. - "We're all scared! It's the human condition. Why do ya thinks I puts on this tough-guy facade?" And every Through The Scary Door. And how I wish I could join The League of Robots... Ah! The...

Thanks for the replies. I'm a lot more caffeinated now, so hopefully that'll bring some clarity. I only noticed I was doing it a few years ago. Or maybe I first noticed that I notice it. It goes on at the pre-conscious level - I think it's something my brain just does. I don't think it's like in the...

(Edited to add video) From Stranger Than Fiction. I first watched the film last year, and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Someone was putting my experience on screen. The intro, I mean. I've never had Emma Thompson narrate my actions. I don't know if I do it all the time and only notice sometime...

I'm David. 32 years old, from north Wales (though not a native). I was diagnosed at the beginning of the year, but wasn't sure if I trusted the psychologist's decision. I've taken the time since to read up what I can and think things through, and finally getting why it's a spectrum - so many experie...
