The reply from Chaos42 is exactly where my family is at right now, too, only with my mother-in-law. She challenges our parenting at every turn instead of making an effort to understand. That line between knowing what our kids need to learn in order to survive in this world and also knowing how much ...

Hi! I have to say I 'feel' ya... My son, who is 8 1/2, was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at 4 1/2. In spite of the fact that everyone in our family is aware of his diagnosis, there are folks who expect that he should have 'grown out of it' by now and that we just don't bother to discipline him. M...

In regard to the comments following the article, I'm amazed at the amount of ignorance displayed by people who think an autism diagnosis is just a cover for bad parenting. They clearly have NO IDEA what goes into an autism diagnosis. Even more compelling are the people who don't think special needs ...

We experience this, too ... Our son will ask about words, phrases and concepts he uses correctly all the time. I have absolutely no clue what it's all about. He's always been hyperlexic, but also had/has some language processing issues. There was a time when he couldn't answer a yes/no question to s...

I have to second you, Climber; your post explains exactly how our family deals with the issue, too. When you give people diagnosis information they become responsible for learning about you, not just assuming things. AS is nothing to be ashamed of and it shouldn't be left solely up to the autistic i...

What's goofy is that during my son's SpEd eligability review at the end of last year, the OT therapist made sure to mention in her report that he was "told by his teacher and his mom" that it was ok not to form letters exactly to method... as though that's some kind of horrendous travesty! Ar...

That is so cool! And Yay for phonetics :D My son has fine motor issues, too, and wants to write but has a hard time keeping at it. His occupational therapist spent most of last year just helping him hold the pencil correctly and apply the right amount of pressure. He just started first grade coming ...

I'm an NT, and it's been a long time since college, but I do remember one freshman icebreaker I went to where they had everybody square dancing , of all things! If that doesn't 'break ice,' nothing will  Anyway, my point here is that even though I'm NT I'm also completely introverted, and the t...

Oh, Smelena I feel your pain! My MIL is coming to visit us tomorrow and she's also a non-believer Instead of lectures, though, I get patronizing nods and e-mails that begin with: "If M were my child, I would...." Makes me want to pull my hair out! |

I myself have never experienced any night terrors personally, but we went through this with our son for a couple of years when he was smaller. He's six now, and hasn't had it happen since he was about four. He's never been a good sleeper, and would wake up just plain screaming before he could talk w...

The last couple posters have made great suggestions :) And just to emphaze something they both mentioned: I've been told by the therapists who work with my son and helped us set up our picture boards that it's critical the system be set up so that the child is able to physically manipulate it in som...

No kidding about all of this being familiar... My son (6) LOVES waffles, and eats them for breakfast every single morning, which gets him out of bed promptly, but after he's done eating the struggle begins. We use a picture card schedule to get him through his morning routine and out the door, but I...
