In principle, I think we absolutely should. But sometimes I wish someone who "gets" how to communicate would take it upon themselves to 1) listen to me and 2) speak up on my behalf / take my defense when I am not able to get through to others. Because I get tired of doing it myself, all th...

I heard a term called "situational tolerance" and it basically explains most of my friendships in life. Friends i made at work and school always gradually lose interest after the situation that puts us together is over. I hadn't heard of that before, that's exactly what happens to me as w...

My therapist is trying to help me to better advocate for my own needs. I try really hard not to ask for things often and not to talk about my difficulties unless they will affect the timeline on which I can get something done. But when I try to articulate what I need from others (and also what I can...

I also feel this. Somehow it is always on me to keep in touch with "friends." Except for family members no one ever calls or texts me without me initiating the conversation, and somehow I'm the one still reaching out when it gradually becomes clear the other person has lost interest. It's ...

I meant to also ask, do you find yourself actually avoiding sleep or just wishing you could? I sometimes keep doing things just to put off sleep when my dreams are bad. A colleague of mine has a fear of sleep, it is an actual disorder like a phobia that she described.

very sorry to hear it. I have been having lots of really bad dreams, one after another, all night long. This after years of having no dreams at all that I could remember. I don’t know what has precipitated it except that I am in graduate school and have so many things on my mind that I struggle to s...

This sounds so exciting!! ! I hope you get it. My former supervisor is an evolutionary biologist with a focus on ornithology, who studied at Cornell. His major professor was responsible for preventing the extinction of the peregrine falcon. I am at grad school now, and really miss working in the lab...

I am sorry to hear this, and also sorry to admit that it is probably a familiar experience to a number of us here. Friends began to really outdistance me in social / emotional maturity in middle school, and the gap continued to widen for quite a while. One thing that I have observed in my adulthood ...

I find myself lying about a lot of stupid things. The reason being that in the past, my honest answers to certain topics led to ridicule or abuse. I found as a child that if I said something opposite to what I really thought / felt, people might still make fun of what I said, but it fails to hurt or...

I have a set of things I comment on which I learned from hearing my mother on the phone when I was a child. I memorized a lot of generic conversation starters just from hearing her side of the conversation. Sometimes she would put the phone on speaker when she was cooking and would talk to people, s...

I think God exists as a philosophical concept. This concept is essential to some people's survival. This is why I don't argue existence/nonexistence too vociferously. Ditto the above. Technically you cannot argue that God / gods do not exist, since at the very least they exist as cultural construct...

Yes, that is a very accurate and eloquent description of fragmented perception. Thank you for sharing it! Glad to have your perspective, too. I think one thing I would add is that I often get very anxious when I am taking in all these details and I realize something has changed in my environment, bu...

I have a few variants of this; the funny thing is, that until you mentioned it, I never thought much about it being unusual before. Whenever I arrive at home or work, I have to spend some time walking around, getting my bearings. If someone interrupts me before I have had a chance to do so, I feel v...

I enjoy exploring interesting places, but I have a lot of anxiety preparing for trips and in the airport. I am usually okay once I have something stable to focus on. I hate airports, there are too many things happening. I prefer to ride trains. It is good to travel with someone who can give you some...

1) I observe things other people overlook. Especially really small details. My colleagues who are scientists ask me to look at their research material, and writers I know ask me to proof their work. I was walking a property line with someone the other day, and although they had been to the location ...
