Why is your social worker not checking to see that they take your insurance before submitting the referral? I don't know. This is the first time I have ever seen anybody for mental health issues in my entire life, so I don't know what's normal and what isn't. She knows I'm on state insurance becaus...

I've been dealing with this issue for over two years now. I'm on insurance finally, and I've recently started seeing a social worker that I was referred to during a physical, for anxiety issues. My social worker is a wonderful lady who really seems like she cares. She "officially" diagnosed me with ...

Thanks for the replies everyone, some really good advice here. I think the thing that upsets me most is that in addition to my spectrum problems, I have general anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorder. When I make people mad, for some stupid reason I get really upset that they're mad at me -- I s...

So, I keep finding myself in these awkward situations where I end up pissing everyone off. I get into what I would consider a very polite debate with people, or answer legitimate questions aimed at me. However, it doesn't matter how simple I keep things, or direct I am. Nobody understands me. Here's...

Are you applying for disability now? You can do that before you see a specialist. Usually they will refer for evaluation if needed. Then when you see a specialist you can ask for help with understanding what's wrong as well as with how to try to make this better. It is overwhelming, but at least th...

Ahe? If your aim is to be officially diagnosed as having Asperger's, you should really go to someone who specializes in autism, not a generalist. That's my suggestion. Yup! In fact, my state insurance specifies that they will help find a specialist for you, and the autism spectrum was on their spec...

If your goal is to end up completing the program, and to get a job that way, I'd focus on/start with the shut/melt downs, maybe lists of recent ones, time-frames (how long they last, how often they happen), triggers, anything of that sort... It kind of irks me that you were tossed for melting down ...

Hello everyone! I have been accepted to my state insurance, which means I can finally "afford" to see a shrink and get diagnosed. The only diagnosis I have regarding my mental state is a "general anxiety" diagnosis from a GP; I have not once seen a shrink in my life. In addition to suffering from an...

So it's just my luck that the autism specialist fell through also. I've been trying to get ahold of her for a week; she doesn't have an email on her website and her office is run by her. She also doesn't list her hours on her website which is really dumb. Well anyway, I talked to her and she isn't t...

I live in Oregon and am looking at the DSHS website right now, I'm not seeing any mention of specific doctors who need to give the diagnosis... I suppose this is a good sign, right? Thank you for the insight. One of my big problems is that I am honestly completely stupid when it comes to dealing wit...

I was lined up to have a thorough diagnosis at a college, until I found out they refuse to diagnose autism spectrum disorders while I was scheduling an appointment. They claimed that they could tell a person that they are on the spectrum, but they refuse to put it on paper. I've been frantically try...

Great advice Rocket, thank you. I am still apprehensive about signing up for this testing. I haven't taken the leap yet, it just seems like the best thing I can do. I have the option of going to a mental health nurse practitioner that specializes in autism spectrum disorders, for a cheaper price. I ...

Hello, I'm going to be getting diagnosed soon at a local college. I have some questions for those of you who have been through a program like this before, or can offer me general advice. I will be signing up for a program that basically makes me a guinea pig for 3-4 hour segments spanning a few days...

All you have to do is do a Google search using keywords "Portland autism resources" and you will get a whole bunch of websites to peruse. Yeah... I've done that. Most of the promising websites in the area don't exist any longer. There are quite a few group therapy related get-togethers, but that is...

I went to the DHS office specifically to ask about my denial. The letter I got was super generic and basically told me that since I'm over the age of 19 and "do not have a current serious disability" that I am denied. The DHS lady told me that they are not accepting anyone over 19, and all slots are...
