Forum: Computers, Math, Science, and Technology   Topic: Can there be a universe where mathematics is different?

The real point is that maths are "just" symbolic logic systems. Most of them happen to be useful for modeling the universe, but there is "pure math" which describes math with no known real world application. Yet it still works like other math in that it's a bunch of theorems proved based on axioms a...

That's a big assumption. What if it's just OP's preference to draw that way, and it doesn't stem from anything other than that? With the amount and kind of information provided, any response is basically a guess. It is possible that I'm reading too much into one comment and jumping to a conclusion....

I went to a psychologist today and this time I brought a sketch book he liked some of the drawings I had and after I was done he pointed out that a lot of my drawings either didn't have people in it, there face was hidden or face was completely blank. So I thought about it and it was sort of weird ...

I've looked at before. I tried mentally filtering comments based on what seemed constructive, but really it's not that useful. Now that I'm nearing the end of my undergraduate study, I have a whole new [dis] appreciation for other students and their opinions. Any class is "hard" if you can't cram th...

Do you really need a CS degree for the programming positions? It would be cool to do something now but I'm two semesters from grduating.

The uniform is a socially learned idea that happens to have utility. A better example would be putting up a verbal fight if a cop asked you to turn off your camera and back away. There is a social expectation to listen even if you think it disagrees with your legal right. When the OP was trying to r...

But you in languages like Java, you have the same problem. You have the same problem in C using pointers, expect that C/C++ always gives you the option of referencing and dereferencing. Java and C# store object references, which means you have to have to either use immutable objects or remember to ...

The best soundbyte I can come up with is this: Linux is an OS like Windows, except Linux is designed by programmers (without bureacrats & managers), for programmers/engineers (as opposed to the non-technical user). If you want to try it, use Unetbootin to burn a Linux ISO to a USB drive. LiveCDs...

What on earth makes you think that an unpopular position is necessarily wrong ? The argument is invalid; I didn't say anything about the conclusion. It is a logical fallacy to argue the correctness of a statement based on the number of people that believe it. Ironically this exactly mirrors argumen...

Anyone offshoring core development work simply has their head up their ass. Be glad they won't hire you, because you don't want to work for them. "Golly gee, motor oil is $3 a quart, but milk is under $1 a quart, so I'll change my oil and replace it with milk!" OP, your biggest problem will be gett...

I'm used to holding unpopular opinions; I'm a Republican. What is the purpose of an emotional statement of political opinion, in a thread about technology? You just suggested that your opinions about technology are as emotional, and as logically vacuous as political opinions. Not to mention the hin...

I gave up the TV thing. I like my dual 24" monitors better. I have more than twice as many pixels as a 1080p TV right in front of me in panoramic view. At this point my 20" TV is just used for the occasional console gaming.

It just occurred to me that playing with your own bum doesn't mean you're gay! If you jerk off, you're holding your own crank, right? If you shove something up your cornhole, is that any more gay than stroking off? It's your butt, it's your ding dong, have fun! Exactly. It feels good because it sti...

Try it if you want to, but basically sales is about manipulating the NT brain using social/emotional thinking, and being very social to put them at ease. I don't see how anyone with more than mild AS could succeed at it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microcontroller The short answer is you have to basically given yourself a bit of a computer science/engineering education before you really appreciate what all this stuff means. Linux is Unix-like and POSIX-based OS, which is basically...

There is truth to this claim, if you are AS. My biggest (slow-motion) epiphany happened when I realized that I have AS (as do lots of other technical minds) and that most people aren't like us. A lot (most?) of how the world operates is based on NT thought and behavior. If you haven't already, read ...
