I don't think text frequency has anything to do with friendship quality. My best friend of 15 years and I text about once a month, and see each other just a few times per year. We hung out all the time when we were younger, but he's moved away and has a wife and son now and is very busy. But we both...

It's hard as an adult. It depends on your country and culture too. I'm in Minnesota, where we tend to be very friendly on the surface, but most people are hard to "really" get to know, and usually have for closest friends people they met in youth. I have a couple very close friends, but on...

I'm circumcised and fine with it. I think it's sad and unnecessary when threads like this come up and some people start trying to make circumcised guys feel bad, like they were barbarically mutilated or something. The organ still performs all its functions fine, and obviously with enough sensitivity...

Ever look around and see all these people getting into relationships and hitting all the usual steps in life and wonder, "What am I doing wrong?" I'm 33. I think I'm okay looking, pretty average. I have a decent job. Some friends. I think I'm nice but not a pushover... Why can't I get into...

I started losing my hair at 18. In my high school senior pics, I still had a full head of blond hair; by the end of the year it was already sparse, and I'm pretty much bald on top now that I'm 30. You can try different things now...rogaine, rosemary oil in your shampoo, etc. But if you're like me an...

I wanted to be a teacher; then I wanted to be an astronomer...then I thought I could teach astronomy. :)

Instead I make just above minimum wage.

But I still look through my telescope every once and a while and think about how it could have been.

You are not dumb and alone. I do this too. And I think you're right that at some point we learned how important it is not to lash out at others, so for some reason we take it out on ourselves. If I am really angry, I will slap myself against the side of my head, punch myself in the arm, punch the wa...

I have shutdowns, though not quite as viscerally physical as what you describe. Mine usually come on after a long day of having to be seriously "on" socially, e.g. at a family gathering or event of that nature. Other things trigger them, too, though. It's rather hard to describe, but I ent...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: High Functioning Autism: Is term worth using?

I don't like it because the term "functioning" can be too vaguely defined and lead to misunderstanding. Social functioning? Physical functioning? Mental functioning? And the unfortunate conclusion is that if some people are "high functioning", are others "low functioning&quo...

Yes and No. When I was little, I was really into dinosaurs, drawing and legos. As a teenager my hobbies were more along the lines of video games and comics. I liked Star Trek, but never quite to "Trekkie" status...I didn't own the series on video or anything. My hobbies became more non-ste...

As much as I like retro video games, I don't see how it's so much deeper of a topic than sports. Obviously you like video games more, but almost anything can be a deep topic. Certainly I would agree with you about celebrities or popular tv shows but that's simply because I don't care about those th...

I also have the problem where I'm overly self-conscious concerning the things I actually enjoy because I'm afraid of people around me not validating me by showing interest/enthusiasm. The result is I don't even talk about "my stuff" and try to connect solely by bringing up things I think others wan...

Religion and/or spirituality is one of my "special interests". I am fascinated by various religions and trying to grasp truth and God. I would say my own spirituality is affected by my being an aspie in that I go through periods where I feel a need to completely and totally understand the religion I...

Fascinating topic. As a Hebrew teacher at a local synagogue (though I was not raised Jewish, I just know the language) and also fascinated by religions and spirituality, I've researched Judaism quite a bit and have pondered at times that Judaism is indeed a rather autistic religion in some ways. It ...
