Have you read about Pathological Demand Avoidance, a type of autism that's recognized and researched in the UK? These kids often have a person as a special interest, just like you describe. You can find some good info online but best is the book.

Fnord, I'm not sure what the purpose is of replying to somebody on an online support forum from the standpoint that maybe their story isn't true. I'm not going to list any more examples but you can rest assured that I am not exaggerating - every doctor, psychiatrist, therapist who's heard any of wha...

Well, it seems that when it comes to "My way or the highway", Dear Hubby chose to hit the road after deciding that life alone is worth more than living under the current conditions. Ok let me get this straight - "my way" involves not emotionally abusing my autistic son. If you t...

Well tonight I found out that he filed for divorce. I'm stunned. Even though I was seeking to limit his interaction with my son by having a physical separation with us using the two separate areas of our house which is like a duplex, I definitely didn't want to get divorced right now. There is too m...

I posted an identical topic about a year and a half ago and nothing has changed. Or I should say nothing has changed for the better - things have actually gotten worse. Those of you who've read my recent stuff know how poorly my son is doing currently. My husband knows he was in the psychiatric inpa...

My son also very rarely answers questions. He's hyperlexic and very verbal though - he talks nonstop, can talk for two hours without stopping, talks when we ask him to stop, interrupts us to talk, and gives us lengthy lectures on what we're doing wrong etc etc. But if we ask him a question he will o...

Thanks everybody. Yes, the cleaning, that's exactly how we have to do it, and I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. The problem since he came off the atypical anti-psychotic meds that he was on for 8 years is that now he won't. He won't do anything at all, even to earn computer time or anything. He can't ...

Thanks all! Amazing how similar some of the stories are. Um, levels? I haven't really gotten into anything with the doctor who diagnosed him. He started him on Gralise for his akathisia and he's ordering a brain MRI to follow up on an MRI my son had when he was around 8 that had found a spot of brai...

I am sorry if anybody is upset by this thread. I appreciate all the replies. To the specific issue, I know my son has trouble seeing things that are right in front of him. I don't even think it's an AS issue as lots of kids, and adults, do it. I seem to revert back when I'm at my mom's house to a ch...

Thanks everybody. Great to hear your perspectives and to read from others about things going on. I do talk to him when he's calm, quite a bit, when he's in the mood to handle it. He says he does these things because he's mad and he just wants to say mean things and cause me trouble. We rehearse or r...

Hi everybody. When your HFA kid has a high IQ and is hyperlexic, what all do you wind up doing for him around the house? Anything you have to, I guess is the answer, so this is sort of a dumb question, but I would just sort of like to compare, if anybody feels like writing about it. My son age 13 ha...

Big big day today. We saw a pediatric neurologist and he diagnosed my son with autism. He reviewed all notes and previous info, observed and talked to my son, and he said that for 13 years the people who've said he's just a disobedient kid or that I'm a mom who doesn't know how to properly use reinf...

I can relate. It seems every time lately that my son goes to one of his classes (woodshop or drama, stuff like that) that something has happened that sounds very impossible unless he's really misinterpreting. So I've been worrying a lot lately about him feeling bad about the interactions and about t...

Wow so mean. I'm so sorry that happened. I don't know really how to recover. My son recovers really easily. When it's on, it's on, and when he's done, BANG, he's all happy and sweet and wanting affection and fun times while I'm still reeling. His meltdowns involve a lot of anger and mean things said...

Ugh. So, my son age 13 does this thing where he deliberately pretends he misunderstands something so that he can demand that we use different words to explain it or help him further beyond once he's got it figured out. So if he asks where are my shoes, I'll say by the couch, and he'll start screamin...

Yes, great point, but we've got that covered. It's only me who's allowed to interact in any sort of a guiding or disciplinary way, and if I'm not around then it's my mom. My husband and my dad have been banned from giving him any suggestions, helpful hints, or demands. Not only to not overwhelm him ...
