The topic of your post bothers me. Why would you post it on a discussion board for families with Autism/Asperger's? This is a perception that the media perpetuates that stigmatizes children on the Autism spectrum. Some children on the Autism spectrum do suffer from other psychiatric issues that may ...

From the sounds of it you sound 21, the fact that you recognize your shortcomings and are willing to work on them in therapy is very mature and responsible. You have made more progress and have a healthier attitude than most "adults", we all have things that we are working on, you should be proud of...

I have been recording the meetings with the Principle and the Social worker. The fact that they have admitted on tape that he is doing fine academically and their only concerns are ones related to the fact that he has PDD-NOS I figure will play out well if it ever does come to filing a complaint for...

Perhaps simplify the points system, if he doesn't think he will hit 18 he might just give up trying. How about earning time for time spent? This is how we do it. Then they see a direct correlation between the time/behavior and the reward. Even if he only "earns" 15 minutes it will be a reward that h...

Q I'm unclear what this meeting has anything to do with the CT shooting. Was it brought up at the meeting? A Not at the first meeting, but I confronted the principle and he admitted that some parents were concerned about that. Q These pictures are not unusual. I see primary-aged (grades K-3) boys dr...

We have tied a reward system to the activities I want my son to focus on. He earns time on the x-box and computer by performing tasks around the house. It has really worked. He is motivated and I get him to do what I want. Find out what motivates your son (my son is also 12) and recognize that this ...

The best advice I can give is trust your own judgement. Not what the "experts" tell you or what the school district might recommend. When my son was 2 I was told that he was mentally ret*d. I didn't believe it, I got him as much care as I could, PT, OT, Speech, full time speech preschool and a typic...

In asking my 12 yr old PDD-NOS son to close the drawers to his dresser last night he said "Mom can't you control your OCD?" Funniest thing ever. Just love how insightful he really is!

Thank you all for your prompt responses. It is a very trying situation. I guess for now it just pays to document everything and to hold the school accountable to dealing with the bullies aggressively. Sometimes it is so hard to be an advocate for our children when other people don't understand the s...

A month after the shooting in CT, our private school scheduled a meeting with me to discuss their concerns with my son. He is 12, PDD-NOS/ADD/Depression. He perseverates on military things (my father is retired Air Force). They showed me a drawing he made that was suppose to be a picture of New Orle...
