I don't have much trouble speaking up in situations like these most of the time, where I have some factual information that I can add. At least not anymore. I have more difficulty with small talk, where it is harder to decide what to say. |

For a social animal making a kill on a larger target isn't what you save your energy for, you save it for fighting the other social creatures for the spoils. That in essence is society: it doesn't matter who actually does what to drive the group forward, or make the biggest contribution, it's about... |

Hi Lea,
I am in a fairly similar situation to you. I am a little bit older, but not too much.
I don't know if it will help you feel any better, but I hear what you are saying. |

I suspect it is not meant to be predatory in most cases. I think for many people it is just the norm to compete in a friendly way. |

I love them, especially at night. I especially love the time just before the rain starts, when the wind picks up and you can see the lightning the distance as the storm approaches. |

I used to humorously dream about ruling the world, but I was never serious. I suspect you intended your post in a similar way. Actually ruling the world would be very tedious, and all the hard work it would take to get there would take valuable time away from studying mathematics. But the thought of... |

I've also been fairly interested in these things. The reason is that there have been a few people in my life -- at work, neighbors, family -- who seemed to enjoy challenging me (and usually besting me) in confrontations, in various settings. It seems that confrontation is a testing grounds for socia... |

Hello Alebear. I've just come back here from a long break, so I'm sort of new here too. I'm sorry to hear of the hard time you've been having. Something I came across recently that seems interesting is "broader autism phenotype". I think that description fits me pretty well, and I can rela... |

Hello everyone. I used to post on this site occasionally, but I felt that I was doing too much complaining, so I took a break. However, I did get some very helpful advice, and I read some interesting posts. I think that I am somewhere on the borderline of being autistic. I definitely struggle with s... |

I can really relate to what you have said in this thread. I am 32, and for most of my life I have felt this way. There was a period around ages 13-16 when I had a group of friends who appreciated and accepted me for my quirks. But then in high school we drifted apart. Around that same time people st... |

I have found the book Choosing Civility: The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct by P. M. Forni to be really helpful. To me it gets right to the point on how to treat people decently in a social setting. I also like that it explains the reasoning behind each of its twenty-five rules. His explan... |

I am fairly noise sensitive. I have the Bose QuietComfort 15 noise canceling headphones. These helped a lot at my last job, where my cubicle was in the part of the office where people like to congregate and have conversations. They don't completely block out sounds like people talking, but they redu... |

I tried to survive for a few years without my internet addiction by limiting how much I used the internet each day. I was okay, but I kept looking for something to soothe me when I was stressed, especially after a long of work. Nothing really helped quite like reading articles, posting on forums, wa... |

I'm moving anyway, not because of the noise. I guess I was just venting in my original message. I did talk to the guy, and he was pretty nice, but made it clear he has no intention of turning down the music. Oh well... that's life I guess. True, in less than a month the problem will be solved. My cu... |

I wouldn't say I hate myself. There was a period in my life when I made quite a few decisions which I am now ashamed of. Nothing really serious, more a string of embarrassing social failures. I didn't really know what I was doing at the time, and everything I did seemed to make things worse. But, th... |

I was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum a few years ago. I probably fit the description of aspergers fairly well. I've noticed that one of the biggest challenges in my life is that I get overwhelmed... a lot. I have to plan my life to make sure I have plenty of free time for being alone and ... |
