Hi all. Believe me... when I accidentally try cheese (don't realize it is in something, etc), I know immediately and my gag reflex kicks in fully within about 0.5 seconds. My taste senses feel completely overwhelmed. It is a different sensation to just stuff I don't like. (Example, not fond of turni...

I'm in a job that requires me to be very social.... and so I've picked up on it a lot over the last 7 years or so. I still suck at small talk and a lot of things, but I can function A LOT better than I did even 5 years ago.

Welcome elizabethangeles.

Misdiagnoses for ASD are actually quite common, so no surprise there to me at least.

You're amongst friends here! :-)

Hi everyone. I know many of us have trouble with certain stronger foods due to sensory issues... mine manifests most strongly as a strong revulsion to Cheese. I also struggle a bit with really strong cream dressings (for example, if I have a Caesar salad with really strong dressing). Even if I enjoy...

In public I rub my hair a lot, or cross my arms and squeeze a bit, or rub my thighs when sitting down.

In private... mine are very complex whole body movements. I can't even really describe them in words very easily.

I completely understand the sentiment... but you probably should have worded the title of the thread a little bit differently. "A Message to People Struggling with Sadness" or something.... I'll be honest, I almost didn't click into the thread when I saw the name and assumed it was some non-autistic...

I would do that when I was around strangers back when I was in high school. Nowadays, it has actually become harder to hide these characteristics from people. Agreed with this. For me, it is mainly because my high school friends were in general pretty crappy friends. Now I have some really great lo...

Maybe my case being as thoroughly documented as it was is unusual? Who knows...

I completely misunderstood what you were saying, my apologies. I'm going to blame it on the fact it is almost 4AM and I'm still awake for some reason... For myself, I have carved out a few people in my life (a few close friends and my mom mainly) who I can be myself around (minus some of the autisti...

I feel like a prisoner of my own mind, but for a different reason. My mind is damn annoying, it keeps repeating things, for example, sentences I said in a conversation rewind like a a non stop looping machine. Also it's very hard to take somethingof my mind, for instance, if I have an irrational fe...

I don't think it is necessarily "faking" it per se. Neurotypicals have traits as children that are no longer present once they reach later stages in their life. Same goes for us, we're different but not THAT different. For example, I used to stimm in the middle of the classroom when I was in Grade 1...

PS. I would strongly advise requesting a referral to a psychologist or neurological psychiatrist who specializes in Autism. In my opinion, a normal psychologist or therapist is generally NOT qualified to make a diagnosis either way. You could either get incorrectly diagnosed with it, or told you don...

One thing I did was pulled my old school records from when I was a kid. As Norny mentioned, you can bias yourself when reading up on a disorder you think you might have. Before talking to any family, friends, professionals about it.. I sent a letter in to the school board I used to attend asking for...

I've learned in my life to have a balance. I live alone, and sometimes end up lost in my own mind for hours on end when I'm by myself. I also like to take walks with music on and by the time I get home I don't remember most of the walk because I've been in another world the whole time. I treasure th...

Hey everyone. Thanks for the replies and sorry for the delay in responding, I do appreciate them. Just been really busy lately. Just to clarify one thing, my friends don't ask me any of those things in a rude way, my friends are pretty mature and great. I worded that part of my first post poorly... ...
