One has to acquire "coping mechanisms," no matter what. It's called being human. For people with Autism Spectrum Disorders, as well as other psychological conditions, it's more difficult to acquire the "coping mechanisms" and to implement the "coping mechanisms." Exact... |

I am amazed by how black and white some people are with Asperger's and high functioning autism. There truly is an overlap between ASDs and the "nerd" personality type that is considered "quirky but normal." Don't believe me? Take a look at this: http://www.succeedsocially.com/int... |

You seem a studious and self-motivated sort, so I will share what has worked well for me in the past. That is, an Amazon query should provide a good selection of primers on conversational skills. Best wishes. Thank you. I'll definitely be getting some e-books on those topics to read once school is ... |

So here's the point.
I'm thinking of ways to improve my social skills over the summer. I will be attending a lot of grad parties as a senior, so I will have a lot of practice in that aspect. But what are other easy, gradual ways to overcome my social anxiety and awkwardness? |

Hello WP, For a little background, I'm currently a HS Senior and possible Aspie (I have gone over this in other threads, but regardless, my social skills could use work). I will be matriculating at Stanford this fall, which begins mid-September. This means I have a summer vacation of ~3 1/2 months. ... |

That kind of thing can happen--very occasionally, a school accepts a special needs person as a sort of mascot and gives them extra kindness. I remember there was a guy in my school who seemed kind of "simple" (like a Forest Gump type) that everyone would say "Hi" to in the halls... |

As they say "anything is possible" but it would be quite unusual for an "aspie" to have great social success. It varies but most autistics experience isolation, ridicule or bullying. Besides Aspergers/Autism is a lot, a very lot more then just social awkwardness. No one will exh... |

Part of the reason I ask this is out of curiosity: I do wonder how much of the vote I got for prom king was pity or irony-related. It's one of those things that can drag you down, if you catch my drift. |

Hey y'all, One subject I've wondered about AS (as someone who quite possibly has it [kindergarten teacher suspected it, have been compared to Rain Man once or twice in math class, & a couple ppl made comments pertaining to this]), one thing I have been blessed with is a lot of people who tolerat... |

Thanks for all the responses guys. I agree with the guy who said not to think myself into problems. I tend to ponder too much on the "What if..+negative thought?" which can hurt my self-esteem. It's good to hear a reminder to relax. As for humanities vs. math, I've been told that I'm a pre... |

I have an adult friend that has a friend with AS working two jobs with a computer science degree. He guaranteed me that you don't need the best social and coping skills to succeed in that area, but you may have to pass-up certain opportunities such as going out to work on a site (temporarily) with ... |

I can't control what others think, but I can control my own thoughts, actions, and behavior.
I refuse to walk around with a chip on my shoulder. The world owes me nothing, and I get that.
There's evil in the world, but one must first conquer the evil in oneself. |

I always found something paradoxical.
There are tons of news stories about how STEM jobs pay the best and those with such degrees have the best employment prospects, yet those with the "Engineer's Disease" (or so it's called) have very poor employment prospects.
Where's the beef? |

Hello WP, Unfortunately, after reading more about autism, I've resigned myself to the fact that I probably have it(being some form of ASD), after much cursing about psychologists/the person who said I might have it and a bit of self-loathing, due to stimming, subpar cue recognition, and intense inte... |

You could make a ballpark guesstimate. In my day the number of HS kids with aspergers who got dx'd was zero, and the ones missed were 100 percent! This was because aspergers was not a recognized condition until 1994. And even after 1994 even most shrinks (let alone parents, and school administrator... |
