Warrington Aspergers Society (WASPS) offers social events for people with Asperger's syndrome and family members - I promised them I'd put a little ad up here for anybody who's interested in coming along. For information, contact Debi on debiost@ntlworld.com - meetings are usually the third Monday o...

nothingunusual, I'd have to disagree about the value our society gives to sociopaths. Even the ones who end up in jail can have films made about them, books written about them, women writing in to say they'll marry them in prison. Go to see any Hollywood action movie nowadays and you'll see the soci...

TobyZ - no, I haven't watched the four-hour video because I just got on this thread a few minutes ago, and since I'm on a dial-up modem where I am right now, I'm not likely to. I was responding to the topic of the thread, not the video you linked to. Narcissism isn't somebody's "fault", as it's prog...

We definitely are in an epidemic of narcissism. I describe it as a love-hate relationship with the person you wish you were; the person that all the hurtful experiences of your life have made you wish you could be; the person you try to be; the person you punish yourself for not being. The narcissis...

I sometimes think - in darker moments! - that the best movie to show how the world looks to the autistic is Mike Judge's superb Idiocracy. But I suppose that's too snarky for an NT audience.

Biogeek, I used to think the same thing! Then I discovered research into the relationship between autism and schizophrenia. Here's a taster. I now believe that autism, psychopathy and schizophrenia are three corners of a square, with borderline personality disorder forming the fourth corner.

There are some similarities in thinking between autists and psychopaths. Both tend to take a very unromantic view of the world around them, the autist focusing on ideas, the psychopath on people. Both tend to enjoy a highly-structured world, the autist preferring control over their inner model of re...

WARNING: a shameless plug follows for this thread . But I was up quite a few nights writing it! I've been thinking a lot about this topic lately. Let's assume that the latest research is true, and autism and schizophrenia are opposite ends of a spectrum. My own intuition is that this applies mainly ...

Well, let's hope so. It's the sort of thing you could see rushed into production the moment any technical hurdles were overcome. It's not so much the engineering difficulties that bother me, it's the cheerful acceptance by the kids that such a thing would be a good idea.

Hi, Pensieve You're right. That's all most aspie kids need, even more s**t to draw attention to them. I was also thinking about the massive potential for abuse here. Why not give the teachers a remote to stun the kid via the chip if a meltdown goes ahead? Why not chip all the kids like in South Park...

Hi Whitetiger! Just a quick message to give you support with your attempts to give up smoking. Keep up the good work. Don't worry if you went back to it for a few days. Everybody's got their preferred method - I've had about five in the last two weeks thanks to nicotine tablets, and nothing at all i...
