Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: List of lesser known Aspergers traits?

I really don't like trait lists like this. They're (for the most part) not inherent traits to ASD, but individual outward expressions of some more fundamental aspect of ASD. Take "Disinterested in sports or other physical activities" for example. You can almost as easily find people on the...

This is something that actually frustrates me a lot. Some of my interests are useful (such as running or photography). Some, like video games, aren't. The problem is, as I'm sure many people here experience too, that my interest is pretty much 100% or 0% with very little in between, and little contr...

Here are the types of posts that I don't respond to ordered by how frequently I encounter them (from most to least). 1) Posts that are just not interesting to me. 2) Posts that I strongly disagree with, but don't have the energy or ability to fully articulate how. 3) Posts that I strongly agree with...

Yeah, I have problems concentrating when there are overly loud conversations going on around me too (though thankfully I don't have to work in a cubicle). I typically manage by putting in my headphones and turning on a white noise app on my phone.

It's typical for the diagnostician to want to review childhood history. Both because childhood history is required for diagnosis in the DSM V and because children tend to openly express traits that they eventually learn to mask as adults. That said, under 2 is rather young to be looking for history,...

The first three seem mostly reasonable in theory (though I'm not sure I like the author's specific examples). I'm questioning the basis for the 4th one though. For me gaming has been one of my principle interests my entire life. It's a hobby and interest that brings me fulfillment and comfort. There...

I feel like he is too young to fully grasp what autism is and this will make him feel different amongst his peers. Why make my child feel like he is different? If anything you've waited too long already. Peers start to pick up on differences and ostracize/bully autistic kids in early elementary sch...

Should i just assume she is correct and that i am actually not autistic, or should i get assessed (PS i am 15 and still live with her, so she decides if i get assessed or not). Like should i trust her and just forget the whole autism/aspergers/asd thing?? Your signature says you were previously dia...

Started around 3rd grade for me (at least as far as I was able to notice), lasted through Sophomore year of HS, when I finally started figuring out how to avoid it. Worst years were definitely middle school, 6th through 8th grade.

I wouldn't call myself unsuccessful, though I'm not a great success. There are quite a few people on WP who are successful in raising families and keeping jobs. Contrary to the "prevailing wisdom," Aspies/autistics frequently are successful in their lives. More or less what I was going to...

Autism Speaks reaction

Pretty pathetic if you ask me. They did not refute one thing Silberman said, all they did is combine every PR statement from the last few years.

A good reaction to their reaction [link], IMO.

I consider the AQ a BAP test, not an autism test. It focuses on a particular kind of BAP, the nerd type. I agree. The only thing I really like about the AQ is that it's quick. It's good to take along with a longer test so you can feel more solid about the results. I like to keep up with Wheelwright...

A fair and level playing field is the only way we can move ahead. This "Affirmative Action" crap doesn't work, and all it does is lower the standards in society in general. We need a meritocracy, not more of this tyranny of the 'entitled'. I have never abused a woman, never enslaved a bla...

I think I'm finally past my doubting stage, just a little over a year after my diagnosis. One big step for me was attending a local meetup with other adults on the spectrum. I expect to still be doubted by others, but I feel confident now in my own understanding of where I lie on the spectrum and ho...

The experience varies from therapist to therapist. I've had 2 bad ones and 1 very good one. The bad ones I dropped after a few sessions, the good one I stayed with for 6 months until I moved out of state. This part Not to mention sometimes my therapist does not even show up and I sit around trying t...

I prefer both, depending on the context and who I'm speaking with. I think autism carries more weight to it, which can be both beneficial and problematic. So I use it when I'm trying to get across to someone that my mind really does work differently than theirs. I think when they hear Aspie they ten...
