Nice find. I wasn't surprised to see the difference in opinion between researchers and laypeople. I've noted that in books on autism I've read (from Paul Offet to Jenny McCarthy). I'll follow the experts, since they have both a methodology for confirming or rejecting their ideas, and the training to... |

Can't speak to the possibility of an ASD here, but Catto, you seem to have social skills that I can only imagine. I have AS with SPD (and synesthesia). Everything from the color and texture of clothing to the lack of anything on my walls is a result of the SPD. My neurologists have me on a med calle... |

The DSM is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, used in psychology and psychiatry as a set of definitions and descriptions for various psychiatric and neurological disorders. The "IV" stands for "fourth version", though right now we're at "IV-TR", where "TR" stands for "text revision". There's a l... |

Can't get intact DNA from amber-encased insects from the Mesozoic era... Can't use such "fictional DNA" to grow a dinosaur... Can't expect a dinosaur to survive in the modern biosphere... For the practical issues involved in potentially creating a "modern dinosaur", check out Jack Horner's book "How... |

I agree too. Definitely get a second opinion. An autism spectrum disorder is one of various possibilities, and you are right to seek proper evaluation. |

I'm still trying to figure out what "spontaneous" means when people tell me I am not spontaneous. I certainly don't "mug for photos", but I'm sufficiently unphotogenic that no one wants me to. I lack Willard's apparent linguistic legerdemain, in writing or speech, and so possibly just don't have any... |

The part of this thread I found most intriguing is the question Glider18 raised in her original post: Why would anyone fake being autistic? I was diagnosed as an adult, though as a child everyone saw me as different, sufficiently so to be put through batteries of tests, sent to psychologists and psy... |

From a long time ago, since I'm 40+. I remember not understanding the concept of cutting in line, and trying to puzzle out why the line operated so inefficiently. I was also confused as to why people would tell me that I was being inappropriate by letting people cut in line in front of me. Apparentl... |

Looks intriguing. Unfortunately my library doesn't have a copy, and I can't afford to buy it. So I'll have to wait. |

I would probably have to add furniture to reach the "spartan" look. And I work at home, so I have office furniture. Plus much of the "furniture" is for my cats. |

Certainly possible, and not at all unusual. It's been over five years since I had sex, and I can't say I miss it. Sex was too complex and intense for my senses, and too involved for my capability to process emotions as adults do. Though I'm chronologically 40+, I'm socially a preteen, according to m... |

I didn't realize how differently I perceive the world until I was put on a med that muted the synesthesia. But from early on in life it was clear I wasn't seeing, hearing, or otherwise sensing the world the way most people do. I can't say that it's easy or hard to live with, except when I try to exp... |

Yes to slapped, punched, and had objects thrown at me. I'm not certain if this is related to my AS per se; it's possible these women were mentally unstable. |

I drive. But I prefer not to. Predicting what other vehicles will do, and keeping the sensory distractions to a minimum, are both quite difficult. Even though I got my license around age 17, I've only had a care for 8 years since then (I'm 40+). Even now, I drive at most 100 miles per month (and hav... |

There is also the problem of the definition of "stimming". When defined as an ASD behavior, then the result is circular: all stims are a part of ASDs. But if stimming is defined more broadly, then compulsive behaviors such as hair-pulling (trichotillomania) may fit. The books on AS and ASDs I've rea... |
