I think some of the terms in your post are deliberately left vague (terms your mother used, I mean) such as "in care." It is not usual that an autistic person living with parents is in care of social services (in the US), although the autistic person may be receiving some government income...

Hello, I believe I have Apsperger's (self-diagnosed). I'm fairly successful in my professional life. The following is not about relationships, but friendships. I meet people in activities and hobbies-related clubs (e.g. Toastmasters). Sometimes I invite them over. They come to my place. We eat. We ...

My pronouns are "He", "Him", and "His Majesty". ha ha ha.... I had an admission interview for a day surgery recently, and the registrar asked how I would like to be addressed. "Well, I would LIKE to be addressed as Your Royal Highness the Duchess of Hightow...

When I first encountered the terms "non-binary," "gender fluid," "gender queer," and the whole "what are your preferred pronouns?" thing, my reaction was: "Huh? Oh great, another set of ideas I have to figure out in my old age if I don't want to offend pe...

If you haven't been to medical school, I don't know why you think you should be able to interpret those blood results. And this is even more true if you have been suffering from concussions, fainting spells, etc. You're a person who likes to assert a lot of control, often by brute force or strength ...

I hear ya, Kitty. I am not happy with how my life went, either, and I definitely feel less smart intellectually than I was at age 20. Just try to find things that make you happy, even fleetingly.

Here's a dose of reality: When instead of forehead lines and gray hairs, aging dishes you up a dose of cancer, stroke, or COPD, you'll be a lot less concerned with forehead lines and gray hairs! At age 40 I noticed a lot of my friends started having health problems they never had before; some even d...

Something everyone needs to know about childhood abuse and family dysfunction: When a small child experiences abuse, it changes their brain chemistry FOREVER. That is not to say you can't have a lot of recovery and a productive life, but to compare your mom "getting over" her abusive marri...

There's a famous scholarly book written by two IQ scientists, Charles Murray and Richard Herstein titled "The Bell Curve" and in that book they show how IQ is implicated in correlations with impulse control, happiness, wealth, income, and happiness indices, meaning people with low IQ tend...

Psychology bachelor's degrees are a way overpopulated field, with poor job prospects. Unless you love it, and plan on going for the master's, I wouldn't recommend it. In lieu of engineering, where other students might have an advantage over you if you haven't done well in calculus, maybe you could f...

For alone and lonely, I recommend cats. Some people prefer dogs, but then you have to walk them and clean up after them. Plus I find the antics and attitudes of cats immensely entertaining.

And if you can do that for a month or two, I will feel proud of you, too. Best wishes, Bea p.s. I hope the neuropsych eval gives...

It's not structured cognitive behavioral therapy, more like supportive as I go through various life challenges between my own disabilities and my family's.

2. People with autism are disqualified from military service. I thought you served in the navy Fnord? He didn't know he was autistic when he served. I've known several older gentlemen who served reliably with autism - because they didn't know at the time that they had autism. Aspergers or ASD-1 did...
