My son has moderate autism. I understand where you're coming from. It's definitely a kind of invisible spot. He's verbal, thankfully, but still needs tons of love and support.

Yes, my current crush is a woman, and a longtime friend of 15 years. I've crushed on her for years and actually told I had feelings for her several years ago. While she didn't have feelings for me back then, she didn't respond negatively at all back then, and we just carried on being close friends....

I think many autistic people simply grow up more slowly when it comes to social/emotional things. So it's not that they never develop this or that skill--it just takes longer. Doesn't change who you are any more than any other part of aging.

Your life and experiences are fascinating, Jimmy. Thank you for sharing them with us. I have been learning all sorts of things about the brain hemispheres lately. It's incredible what people can recover from. I hope you continue to improve.

Please don't tell people you "ran out of spoons." They won't understand.

A simple "I broke down due to stress. I'm sorry," will go a long way with most people.

I really don't understand this concept of "masking" as substantially different from stuff NTs do, too. The article gives the example of making fake smiles, but NTs do that all the time, especially everyone in service jobs like waiters and cashiers. Then it talks about pretending to be inte...

You are giving off some sign that you might not be ok, and they are checking to see how you are doing because they care about you. They might not actually be aware enough of what different moods and expressions look like to be able to verbalize what made them think something might be wrong, or after...

I like the idea of a party and definitely think you should throw one for yourself. Life is short. Have fun! You might consider changing the theme from "unmasking" to something a little more flexible like "being the best I can be" or "being myself." Either way, I think w...

I can not agree with some of this. Making accommodations for people who are intelligent enough for college level work but whose disabilities/neurodivergence would under normal circumstances prohibit them from handling college is a good thing. But allowing people who are not intelligent enough to ha...

Hello and welcome. That sounds very rough for both you and your daughter. I think it's important to keep your goals in mind, whatever they are. (Obviously your big picture goal is helping her feel better.) BTW, has her doctor given her a full medical workup to rule out any health problems? A boy I k...

I've mellowed a lot.
I used to be very lonely, which made me cranky. Now I have my family and am happy.

^^ LOL. In the general population about 81% of people would have parents who are both right-handed, 18% would have only one right-handed parent and a mere 1% would not have a right-handed parent. Disclaimer: does not consider ambidextrous or degree of handiness. Exactly! Obviously this poll isn't e...

The problem isn't "Making small talk in the hallway, interacting during a group Scripture study or negotiating on a service project," lol. What kind of lovely fantasy world does this author live in? Let's see: my son got us kicked out of Mommy and Me at synagogue because he wouldn't stop s...

I know but the risks are there, same as when you get covid; you'll most likely recover but the risk of long covid or severe illness is still there for everybody even with the vaccines in place... Yes, but by the same token, pretty much everything caries risks. A friend of mine was in a car accident...

However the catch all approach has been very useful (sadly) in promoting and maintaining stigma and prejudice. As individuals we are debased to "them", so we can be conveniently framed (subtly and unsubtly) as threats to "social normality". I think the opposite; most of us used ...
