My son is like this. It often looks like he is arguing with adults, but I know he really isn't. I think for him it is a combination of something being logical and also having it conform to his understanding of justice and truthfulness. He gets tripped up when he doesn't understand the logic, when he...

Having a set of rules to follow on a day-to-day basis is the most important issue for an Aspergers (High-Functioning Autism) child who is “structure-dependent.” Once this child has a list of DOs and DONTs to follow, there tends to be few concerns except in areas where the parent has not yet establi...

Hi, Mike, Having our kids diagnosed it what leads a lot of us to finally understand what's been going on our whole lives. I would not consider myself AS (though I am probably a shadow), and I definitely have ADD. I would have never known that my problem was ADD until my son was diagnosed and I was t...

I found the book "Women from Another Planet?" to be incredibly illuminating. I have since decided I am not autistic (but definitely ADD), but I do have some traits and the book helped me understand a lot.

Hi! I'm new too! I haven't read all of the responses yet, but I do want to share two things you might find helpful. The first is that my daughter is quite verbal. Actually advanced verbally at this point (though she was delayed and didn't start to really catch up until she was 4 and older). However,...

Hi, Lamb, My daughter was first diagnosed around the age of your son. She was nonverbal and diagnosed with moderate to severe classic autism. She is now about to go into 2nd grade and is doing great. She had a 1:1 for 2 years of pre-k, but now she is in a mainstream classroom with just a social skil...

Awesome study idea! I have always said it isn't that my kids lack empathy. It's that they can't always figure out how the other person feels. It's hard to display empathy when you have no idea how someone else feels. My son is actually probably hyper-empathic once he is able to identify how someone ...

Don't make them be something they're not. If it's harmless (even if people pick on them and make them feel sad) it's the bullies that should have to change, not them. I must confess that at first when you asked this I thought "The fact that she has to ask others proves she doesn't have a mind of he...

Hi there, My son is nearly 7 , has been diagnosed with aspergers and ADHD. He hates school, but has high IQ. I am battling with what to say to help him. When he gets angry at himself, if he can't do something exactly as he wanted to, he says he is stupid, hates himself and wishes he was dead..........

Hello, all! I am a mother of two atypically wired kids. My 'tween son has ADHD with a bit of AS overlap and his younger sister, my daughter...well, she was initally diagnosed with classic autism and although I have no doubt she is still on the spectrum, I'm not quite sure what label she would approp...
