In my personal decision making I often use Appeal To Authority as a helpful heuristic. The trick is in picking who to consider an authority. Authorities often don't all agree on something so figuring out which one to listen to when I don't have the educational background (or smarts  ) to asse...

true in that it is only partly a direct democracy, a full one would quickly bog down most people, so one would need a golden middle road. perhaps something akin to the rep system you describe. Actually, the one I describe is full direct democracy. However, the association has 340 members, and rarel...

i never understood why direct democracy isnt the defacto governmental type in the west of the 21st century. our technology mitigates the biggest challenge in making it work, colllecting the votes and informing the public of said vote. would it work everywhere, probably not, le sigh. Switzerland doe...

However, at the moment, it recalls nazism. In most of the West it does, yes. But it also has many other meanings, those of which have been held for millennia. So, whilst it is associated (mainly in the West) solely with Nazism, for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains it means something completely different...

You agree with me. If the NSDAP hadn't happened, it would just have been another flag. Yes, but it did. If Jesus hadn't been crucified, the cross would not be a Christian symbol. If the Russian Revolution had not been happened, the hammer and sickle would not be a communist symbol (same with the re...

The appeal to popularity works most of the time, as long as you are using a group of people who can be expected to accurately judge whether something is "good". Anthropomorphic climate change is supported by 99.9% of climate scientists. Most fans of cinema prefer The Matrix to Cars 2. Your examples...

I don't care if it disappears completely. I already have my own biases with or without the media. Taking sides is not blatant disregard for the facts, it means synthesizing the information and transmitting clear ideas to readers who know what they want to learn. When I read the newspaper while eatin...

I'm the kind of guy who thinks humanity was more productive in the Dark Ages than in the Renaissance. Define "Dark Ages" and "Renaissance". I can find at least three different meanings for each: Greek Dark Ages (12th-8th centuries BCE or thereabout), the Middle Ages in general (typically, 5th-15th ...

You know, not so long ago, I had a discussion about the idea of anarchy with an extreme left-wing person, that said that anarchy is the only true way of living, because there would be no oppression, no force, no one controlling you. I disagreed. He said something along the lines that of course I wo...

Anarchy would not work because there is too much hostility among the masses there would be no civilization just a bunch of tribes of bandits with everyon out for themselves. The "the people cannot take care of itself" argument was already used against democracy. It has failed once, it can fail again.

anarcho-capitalism is not anarchism It is a radically different form of anarchism from left-anarchism in general, but it is anarchism nonetheless. It derives from a different tradition: anarcho-capitalism is basically total, unrestrained liberty, beyond what classic liberalism argues for but in the...

Normally, it is rather bad form to bring threads back from the dead. Better to start a new one. This way, one does not need to read 7 pages from the start, whereas one can join a new thread as it begins.

(Yes, the pun was intended -- or rather, noticed, since I always use this expression.)

By the way, which anarchy are we talking about? Anarcho communism or anarcho capitalism or else? This is actually a rather good intervention. My understanding is that nominalist and I are having a calm conversation over the definition of anarchism in its broadest sense, while everyone else is havin...
