1) Star Trek (in its many incarnations) for sheer originality. 2) Doctor Who. The only reason I rank this behind Star Trek is that most of their aliens and/or monsters seem to be mutant forms of terrestrial animals (rhinos, spiders, scorpions, etc.). Even in the old Star Trek, the aliens looked and ...

Now that there's a big drought until more episodes start, I'm going to try and track down some of the older episodes. Aaaaaargh!! ! 8O  I just got hooked on the show this year, and now there are only going to be three Dr.Who specials for 2009 while the Doctor is off playing Hamlet. To stave of...

Here's a great quote from my favorite AS book: "A child who is aggressive, noisy, exhibiting lack of motor inhibition (wild, acting out) is attended to, and this behavior is characteristic of boys. A child who is well behaved, quiet, and apparently compliant will often be overlooked, sometimes despi...

"Noise-cancelling" headphones don't block or muffle all background noise, they just smooth out the acoustic spikes (this is what "noise" means to sound engineers). The only use I have for them is on small planes. They're great at muffling the whiny roar of turboprop engines. I'd suggest a white nois...

Actually I considered this when I was in college searching for a career. I came across a book of unusual jobs which included a description of life at an Antarctic research station. The "solitary" element involves being separated from family and friends, and interacting only with scientists who tend ...

This thread reminds me of a line from one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek TNG.

During First Contact with Captain Picard, a scientist learns the Enterprise crew has been learning about her culture by watching their TV: "I hate to think what impression you'd get of us from the daily broadcasts."

I abhor tradition for tradition's sake. I celebrate days that have special meaning for me, not ones that card companies and florists invented to sell their products. I think Festivus is the only public holiday that I would consider, because its customs and schedule are DIY by definition. ___________...

I usually lack general knowledge, not because of forgetting but because I'm not interested in acquiring it. I never watch the news on TV, I skip political articles in the newspaper, I don't regularly talk with the kind of people who like to discuss current affairs (either local or world). And I'm us...

Good point, Ouinon: Even positive social interaction can be overwhelming and cause us to shut down. After prolonged socializing, I need to calm my mind with music or computer games before I can think straight or go to sleep. ___________________________________________________________________________...

You can predict when lilacs will bloom by summing the squared mean daily temperatures (Celsius) since the last frost. Use an average of the past few years' daily temperatures to forecast the date when this sum will reach 4264. Although it was originally published in London, I've found that this algo...
