Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Life expectancy of people with Asperger's or HFA?

What is the life expectancy of people at the "high" end of the spectrum? The more I learn about my condition, the more doomed I feel. I have co-morbid conditions of depression and anxiety as well as some personality disorders (social avoidance and some other one... I forget). Basically, I'm terribly...

And why people equate failure with not even trying I don't know. I know why. It's called "blaming the victim". People do it to pat themselves on the back (I'm successful because I tried, not because of good luck, good health, good genes, good family, good looks, the right personality, enough intell...

Let's not forget the people who sap off the system and aren't even disabled. There is this guy that weighs about 390 and claims he needs his disability money due to his weight. This same individual then spends this money on jet-skis, boats, and motorcycles. That story is bunk. In order to receive f...

This is a question for those of you with Asperger's or HFA only (because I have one of these, and I need info that's most relevant to me).... I set up a poll the other day to find out what percentage of people w/ Asperger's or HFA are supporting themselves, or are supported by family, or are on disa...

^ U of Chicago? Then clearly he was a smart guy. I will definitely look up Leo Strauss. Is there anything specific I should look for? (a book of his that you read, or something?)

This is a poll for those of you with Asperger's or HFA only (for more accurate results).... I have either HFA or Asperger's and I'm having a hell of a difficult time of life. I have no idea how to support myself. Every job I've ever attempted has been miserable & unsustainable, and/or a total di...

xenon13 - that was an absolutely brilliant post! A few years ago I would have been clueless as to what you were talking about. Today I see it exactly like that, but I've never been able to express it as clearly as you have. I am so fearful - almost NOBODY seems to know what's really going on - the m...

I don't think it's a new trend - for as long as I can remember job ads always asked for "high energy people person" or "must love people", etc. I always thought of it as discrimination against the introverted, but it certainly discriminates against people on the spectrum as well, since the vast majo...

What is a creep anyway? And how do you not be one? Augh... it just gets worse and worse... EDIT: Yeah, I haven't been called a creep to my face either, but some people have made me feel like I must be one... it's just the worse feeling in the world. I mean, you think you're a nice guy, and people sh...

I think our entire way of thinking about crime is deeply flawed. The vast majority of people are never going to murder anyone, no matter how much they think about it or feel like it. Thus, those who do are by definition abnormal. And since we still have no idea why some people murder, we really have...

Though I live on very little and don't have a job (and can't), I am not poor enough to apply for SSI. I had applied for SSDI years ago, before I even suspected I might have AS, because of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, but I was turned down. I now no longer have the qualifying credits from worki...

I'm on SSI disability, which was approved for my depression, but I'm sure I also have either HFA or Asperger's.

How can I use Medicaid to get an official HFA, Asperger's or other Autism Spectrum diagnosis?

Will this help me keep my eligibility for SSI and Medicaid?

I think your instincts about this are right.. I also wouldn't disclose my Asperger's directly. I don't see what good could come of that unless you're telling it to someone who really knows about the condition AND is sympathetic. How many people are like that?

So all-in-all, it sounds like you're much better off in Canada, no? I don't know the answer to your question, but I suspect that had you grown up in Ukraine, things would've been much worse for you, based on how you described the cultural differences. You blame the language difference for your inabi...

hey, even hitler had a girlfriend. That's not surprising at all - it would be surprising if he didn't have a girlfriend. As they say, power is the ultimate aphrodisiac. From what I read, most women and girls in Germany at the time were in love with Hitler. (Ever seen pics of pre-war Nazi party rall...
