I do know of the Regional Center here in our area, but what I didn't realize is that they can advocate. That's very interesting and worth noting. I'll check into that Lainie, thanks! :)

When I wrote about the Blue Ribbon schools, and the fact that it's a good school - which it absolutely is, I meant specifically for an overachiever - like my oldest. It is NOT good, however, for any kid who struggles, whether it just be a moderate struggle to get through school (not everyone is an A...

I don't hate anyone who homeschools - but it absolutely is not for me, or my son at this point. As anyone does, I have my gifts and limitations - and those are beyond mine at this particular point in time. That could certainly change, but for right now - no. I was in a hurry last night when I posted...

when you've been told by your advocate that you're about to get into an uphill battle over getting an IEP for your son. His state test scores and grades are too high to qualify for any services. Yet he's definitely an Aspie, and really does have trouble - it's just not OBVIOUS trouble that the schoo...

Thanks.... my son already, often insists on wearing long sleeved shirts and jeans/pants in 90 degree weather...it seems to comfort him to have all his body parts covered, .....so, this weighted blanket idea may help. What is a weighted blanket, what does it do for an Aspie child, and where can I ge...

This is interesting - my son was just diagnosed HFA by a doctor from UCI. I suppose you could say she's an expert in the field of Autism, so I feel comfortable with what she's discussed with me. While giving me the diagnosis for my son, she explained that the reason for her diagnosis of HFA rather ...

Wow - thankfully my son doesn't get upset and act out quite like that (meaning he doesn't throw...but he DOES do other things, like kick, hit...etc.), but the chewing thing is still a problem here. He doesn't really like gum much and ends up swallowing it most of the time. The washcloths work the be...

I totally agree with JsMom - we actually went to a respected neurologist who is an expert in the field of Autism and Aspergers. I don't necessarily think that you have to go to a neuro psychiatrist if you can't find one near you, but you definitely need a neurologist to give you an accurate diagnosi...

My friend was visiting and tested my son on reading expressions. At first, he refused to sit with us, running behind the couch and hiding in fear. After we coaxed him out by telling him there weren't any wrong answers and that it was a game, he tentatively stood right by me, holding on to me for dea...

OK...I'll brag about my Aspie son! Last week, in less than 5 minutes, he was able to completely remove every last "jet" from our backyard hot tub, line them all up along the rim of the hot tub, and as an added bonus - he completely took apart two of those jets. Turns out - he can put them all ...

My son has kind of moved on from Pokemon into some other things - one of them being this Animal Crossing video game for the game cube. The game is set up so that your character can have their own house, fish, sell things, make friends...that sort of thing. Well, one of my son's "friends" moved away ...

All the school district is legally entitled (or allowed) to do is evaluate the child. They can't diagnose, and all they are evaluating is whether or not the Aspergers or Autism has an effect on the child ACADEMICALLY. That's the problem with where we are with my son - his autism effects him socially...

We live in Southern California and I've yet to find any kind of group practice that takes our insurance (Aetna)...and there doesn't seem to be much help otherwise. My son just turned 8, and he was diagnosed in June. The state of California - from it's schools right down - seems to have real trouble ...

That is a fabulous example of an idea to try, EvilTeach! This is exactly the type of thing I'd like to try - specifically because when he starts school - I'll need to be able to give the school and teachers ideas of things to try. That is of course, if I can work with the school to either qualify hi...

I just have to laugh because most...if not ALL of the items you list there (including the ring pull off of a soda can) are things that my darling son has been caught chewing on over the course of his life. Thankfully we got him to understand the electrical cords are off limits pretty quickly. (my hu...
