If you want to play an MMO, but don't want to be forced into teams against your will just to complete core content, I would like to recommend two from Cryptic Games/PWE: Champions Online and Star Trek Online. In Champions Online (CO), you play a superhero, starting in Millennium City, MI (it used to...

It should be possible to simply install Win 7 as the OS; that will require purchasing a copy, however, so it might be easier to learn the vagaries of Win 8 instead. (Hillary got a new laptop for Christmas, and has had to learn to deal with Win 8. Occasionally, this has meant that I have to deal with...

There is no single "autism gene", nor does there seem to be a single copy error that can be said to be the cause (not like, say, trisomy 21 leading to Downs Syndrome). Instead, there seem to be a lot of single-gene copy errors that can contribute; further, some possible epigenetic causes have been i...

It may be worth noting that the legal system in question here is the same one that convicted a group of Italian seismologists of manslaughter for failing to predict an earthquake - an event which, by its very nature, is unpredictable.

I wouldn't put much store by this decision, were I you.

When Hoyle coined the phrase, he was actually trying to ridicule the idea. It's similar to the famed Schroedinger thought-experiment in quantum physics, where the cat is neither alive nor dead until someone opens the box and collapses its wave-function through observation. Schroedinger was actually ...

Zero, the law addresses individuals and marriage. Restricting it by sexual preference denies to one class of citizens a privilege extended to other classes, which clearly violates the 14th Amendment. As for "traditional" marriage - "traditionally", marriage has followed every conceivable pattern. Th...

Zero, rights are an artifact of law. Where there is no law, there are no rights, merely privileges backed by force. Now, let's turn to the law, specifically the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States - the "supreme law of the land". 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United S...

That's why NASA has built a testbed to see if they can use the negative energy generated by the Casimir effect to create a microscopic Alcubierre-White warp. If that can be done, then the math describes something real. If not, then it doesn't. For the purposes of the story in the OP, though, we can ...

White's work is important because Alcubierre's original equations called for a torus of exotic matter massing approximately as much as the planet Jupiter. White fiddled with the equations, and found that if you oscillate the edges of the warp bubble and assume a flattened toroid rather than a full d...

History has shown - again and again - that peace, liberty and prosperity can only thrive in societies founded upon Divine Law. You mean like Saudi Arabia? Or perhaps Afghanistan? Are we discussing the freedoms enjoyed under Ferdinand of Spain, during the Grand Inquisition? Or perhaps the joys of be...

Actually, zer0, you're mistaken. The executive branch is obligated to do its best to carry out the law as passed by the legislative; however, if the judicial branch has to decide a challenge against the law, the executive can choose whether or not to defend said law. The executive branch is not "les...

I'd have pegged Carter as a worse president than Bush the Second, personally. Bush II may have been - er - somewhat lacking in intellectual rigor or curiosity, he may have been willing to endorse whatever statements were necessary to try the Neo-Conservative idea that forcing Iraq into democracy wou...

The War Powers Act of 1974 specifies that the President cannot deploy troops overseas for more than 90 days without Congressional approval. Nothing in there about "boots on the ground", just a time frame. However, the Congressional Authorization for the Use of Force permits the President to use what...

They say that there is this War of Terror and that PoWs must be kept until Terror is defeated. Why not do this with the War of Drugs. Just have the Military Police grab people they suspect as being involved in Drugs, and make them PoWs of Drugs and keep them in prison until Drugs are defeated. Well...
