Just a thought. The DSM-5 criteria for SPCD include "The symptoms are not attributable to another medical or neurological condition or to low abilities in the domains of word structure and grammar, and are not better explained by autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability (intellectual d... |

I was in a little program for kids with developmental issues between ages 3 and 4 and the doctor running it introduced us to Blissymbols (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blissymbols) which is a nonverbal constructed language. It has always appealed to me because, although I can talk up a storm, I'm ... |

Good question - I'll be interested to see others' answers too. If I'm in a crowded supermarket and get overloaded, I get really impatient to leave, I get quiet and generally won't bother to make small-talk or eye contact with the cashier. I tend to get clammy and sometimes start sweating. I start to... |

I haven't really run into problems with people who have too much awareness about autism. I'm autistic and had a successful career, so I might be called 'high functioning', although I don't favor that term because it makes it sound as if the person doesn't have impairments or deficits that can seriou... |

Interesting question and poll results - almost 50-50%. Up until I was about 40 years old, I loved spicy hot food. I used to slice habanero peppers and salt them and eat them straight. Had to be really careful not to touch my eyes even after scrubbing my hands. But for the last 10 years I've grown ve... |

It's encouraging that you have awareness of this at a younger age. I was diagnosed autistic at 3 years old and was in denial about it until I was about 55. Therapists kept cautiously and tactfully asking me about being on the spectrum and I ignored in part because I was focusing hard on career, fail... |

I went to school in southern California in the 1960s and 1970s. I was diagnosed autistic at 2.75 years old, then was in a program for kids with developmental disabilities from then until 4 years old (I didn't speak until 4). I was mainstreamed from kindergarten onward in public school. I'm high-func... |

That's interesting - I find I have almost the opposite issue: when something interrupts me or when I move from one task to another, I tend to suddenly lose track of the first task. I've chalked it up to weak short-term memory, as if the new task requires my full focus and all of my short-term memory... |

Too much stress. Too much drama. Yelling. Screaming. And death threats bouncing off the walls at all speeds and all intervals. How do you cope when the S hits the F? When your last hope is yourself? In other words, how do you cope when you feel so uncomfortable and uncertain with your safety that y... |

I've ranged from 125 to 230 pounds as an adult. Some of the great variability has to do with my preference to eat the same thing each day until I start to have ill effects from the limited diet. So most of the time I'll be putting on a couple of pounds every month or taking off a couple of pounds ev... |

Thanks everyone for the great replies! You've given me a lot of very useful info to think about. @eyedash do you feel the path you took helped you navigate the NT world a bit more than you would have otherwise? Would you have stayed in some kind of specialized program if you could do it again? I re... |

It's wonderful that you are being so conscientious about evaluating the best options for your son. It is a trade-off. I'm autistic and was in a special program for kids with developmental disorders from about 3-4 years old, then entered kindergarten and was mainstreamed in public education. I did ve... |

Interesting topic. I think social media is truly challenging. In person, I get positive reactions from most folks now, although when I was a kid that was certainly not the case at all. I got bullied and ostracized in school. But I've had a lot of practice over the decades and I show interest in peop... |

Answering literally, it definitely sounds like you worry about what other people think of you. I think social media has broadened the audience for our sharing of life events and accomplishments and the lack of non-verbal cues in communicating these increases the likelihood that such sharing will lea... |

This is a good question. I checked: ‘Acknowledging that my problems are valid’, ‘Filling me in on all of the relevant facts of my problems’, and ‘Telling to me your own similar personal experiences’. And I like the idea of friendly encouragement a lot too. But especially if the request was from a ne... |
