I've posted this, bit I have a imaginary brother/father figure since a sufficient one has never existed. One of the best friends I've ever had. Interesting. I think Nicholas Iverson was a projection of a same-age sibling I wished I had but didn't. He was also a fantasy: being free of all adult auth...

Not really. We're talking about how people seek to deny others the right to feel bad about things. Well, this thread started as a debate whether it's normal to enjoy hospital procedures, needles and all. It later evolved into trashing of pediatric medicine, which was an inhumane butcher shop when I...

Yep, same here. I didn't have a therapist of course, they didn't exist in Britain til the 1990s at the earliest. But telling my mum about my feelings was a very big mistake. She would get angry and/or offended and storm out of the room, or say 'I've got much bigger problems than you!' <snip> Good l...

That is a ridiculous situation for you to be in. If we don't educate children from birth about what emotions are and what to do about them, they'll never know. It's different in my house. My daughter has grown up being asked how she feels about something and what the emotion is and what to do about...

Babies feel pain even in the womb. It's only common sense. Why else do babies tremor and cry when they get their shots? It's certainly not to put on a show! Ironically, as a child, I believed that adults couldn't feel pain due to their nerve endings atrophying from aging. (Similar to how adults hav...

Yes, it drives me mad when people say 'be a brave boy' 'big boys don't cry' etc. A boy is a CHILD. He should be allowed to cry/show his feelings. What's really ironic is that my therapist always demanded to know my feelings in situations I told her about. And she was LIVID whenever I'd say "I ...

Jeez. The American system must be harsh. All doctors and nurses were polite and caring to my daughter. One nurse called her 'little princess' and fussed over her. She is a very cute little girl though. Poor bedside manners aren't uncommon among US pediatricians, UNLESS you go to a designated childr...

I've got no sympathy with parents like that, sorry. They are jerks. A basic observation of their child's reaction to a medical procedure should be enough to know they are feeling pain or at least fear :x I think a big reason, although not the only one, I feel so comfortable in the hospital is the l...

I found this very helpful. Many of my issues when I was younger were because I didn't recognize social cues where I was actually being patronized and talked down to, and I didn't recognize when people were being fake. I think it is very helpful for people to know about this "cooing" signa...

I've found that children's doctors and nurses were the kindest people, much better than the ones for adults. And me and my husband would never disbelieve our daughter was in pain, why would we. That's cruel. Well, due to anatomy/biology, children feel pain much more strongly than adults do. So, a C...

My daughter went to hospital numerous times as a little one. In some ways I liked it because someone else was in charge of her and could make her better, while I was just exhausted and frightened. My hospital experiences as a child were generally pretty bad. Pediatricians were callous and unsympath...

It's understandable because your experience there at that particular hospital has been nothing but pleasant and there's no stress factor, with your boss being understanding, plus the nice time at the hospital food court. The whole thing sounds like fun. It's not weird at all. I'd feel the same. Yea...

I suspect familiarity helps make it a comfortable part of your routine. We get most of our medical care at a hospital. I like going because they have good food! That's true. The first time I reported for a procedure, I was skittish and nervous the whole time, and didn't say a single word to anyone ...

Earlier this year, I developed a health problem. And starting about 2 months ago, I started going to the hospital once every 10 days on average to get it treated. That meant one minor surgery and a battery of procedures. I know the drill very well by now: report as orderd, check in, change into my g...

As a younger child, I never had imaginary friends, although I was aware of the concept. Instead, I had lots of stuffed animals, with most of them being dogs, that acted as my "imaginary" friends. Each of them had a backstory of how they met me and my other stuffed animals. I'd spend hours ...

No, therapists are not trying to drop "hints" by cooing at people. ... It is more likely that when she said "aww," she was expressing *sympathy* because of something you'd just said. Pfft! That wasn't "sympathy"! The tone of her cooing was the same as if I broug...
